Not having much scenery seems to make renders go faster. Some of my fastest renders have been when I have a character alone inside the HDRI soft lighting domes I like to use.

That certainly helps, but my first attempt at this scene took an hour to render to 50%, and all it took was a change of lighting to get it down to 8-10 minutes. The actual first pic in the sequence (rendered later) took 15 mins and it has the downstairs area in it an lots of scene lights. It can be a bit of a mystery to me sometimes.

Awesome dude. I'm working on a new series with Kate and Max as well, got everything done but can't get the lighting and the skin tone for Kate right. I was trying to match her skin tone using Melisande mats and a custom shader, with no luck at all. I fking hate Alice's room so much, too many mirrors for a small room. Darksilver inconsistency with light and skin tones between scenes is driving me crazy. Seriously, 3 days working on the event and 1 week trying to set up the lights...

Sorry meant to answer this earlier... I try to match to the later renders because I think they're better quality and less photoshop is used. For Kate's skin I don't have a properly tested version yet (my renders are low light, so I need to work on the skin for other conditions). But to get you started just load the standard Melisande All mat, and the make-up, and then the legacy shader, make the translucency colour red(1,0,0) and the Translucency weight 0.6. Base colour effect to scatter only. Turn on Dual Lobe Specular weight to 0.6. Specular lobe 1 Roughness to 0.6 and specular lobe 2 roughness to 0.45... Then adjust the base colour to get the skin tone right.

oh man I was hoping up against the wall standing missionary:(
You'll be happy tomorrow;)

Okay off to sleep.
