RPGM [poll] Why Do People Love Rpg Games That Much ?

Are RPG Maker games worth playing ?

  • Yes, but only because of the story

  • Yes, but only because of the art

  • Yes, because of the engine (how it plays out)

  • No, because of the art

  • No, because of the story

  • No, because of the engine (how it plays out)

  • If the art exists in another engine, I'll change to it.

It is too late for me to reply but if anybody will ask this again at least my reply will be viewed for someone recently got into this webpage. I say I like rpgm because of its adventurous type and simulates me having adventure throughout the different world. Especially the esakai or harem type, The last Sovereign for example. Whether the rpgm is short or not, as long as it simulates my mind like I was living in that environment! But that doesn't mean I hate unity or renpy or others, It really just depends how the word plays well. In short, implementing a story just like you are reading a harry potter book :) or novels.

The poll is missing a lot of options. :) For me personally it isn't about about art or "story" (seriously, who even reads hours worth of "story" in a porn game?). What I look for in a porn _game_ is game mechanics, mixed with porn. Preferably mechanics tied to porn in some ways. Some RPGM works (can't call most of them "games" TBH) get it, most don't. E.G. Karryn's Prison - pretty good as a game, with some fucking and art during (and as a way of) combat. Then there are knight nord games by ahriman, with relatively fun capture breakout play. Everything else those games have is kind of irrelevant to me. :)

But it doesn't have to be RPGM. It's just the endigne that is seemingly easy for creators with minimal coding experience to work with. There are some pretty good games made in twine (HTML-based, played in a browser), some with better coding skills roll with unity/unreal.

Guess what I'm trying to say is that people don't look specifically for RPGMaker games. It's just that RPGMaker is more accessible to indie/newbie developers, so there's a lot of them on offer (and a lot of junk for some of us to dig through to find hidden gems).

Necromancy aside I just don't actively dislike RPGM mechanics. Time wasters and grind loops are trivial to implement in other engines too.

Where the RPGM games I like specifically excel, though not explicitly dependent on that engine, is what I would call "choice persistence". In VNs you often make some key story choices, and possibly many minor ones aggregated into a relationship score. But having individual lewd or sexual choices carry over independently is exceedingly rare and some RPGM games do a much better job at that. As an example the game might let you take off your panties but the next pre-rendered sex scene will still shown them in the opening part whereas procedurally assembled sprites as used more often in RPGM will correctly show you going commando, and might even have a line commenting on that.

But sandbox games in other engines can do this too, it's just that good RPGM games do do it more diligently.

- Good gameplay is always appreciated.
- I personally prefer a bit of padding between sex scenes/corruption progression. Give it a breather and maybe build some suspense.
- Having to "earn" the scenes feels more satisfying than just clicking though them. Again, as long as the gameplay doesn't suck.

For me, it's a variety of things that make me love rpgs (their explosiveness, how easily they deal with Metal Gear... oh wait, wrong rpg). If I'm playing a game, I want to be engaged in it, not just reading a story with the occasional dialogue choice seemingly reluctantly given to me by the writer. I don't just want a great story (or porn), I want to have a hand in shaping how it and the world/NPCs open up, and not in the cheap "You are the main character railroaded on this plot" way (seriously, if you have a rigid plot, just define who the MC is, instead of saying he's 'you').

For me, most rpgs just have that near perfect mix of story, character, exploration and gameplay that rises it above other games. I think the only 'genre' I like more are well-crafted metroidvanias.

This isn't to say that I dislike VNs (usually the alternative people toute when complaining about rpgs in porn games), but they have to have something that really, really grabs my attention. You've got to be the Bible Black/Euphoria/Taimanin Asagi in the sea of "Joe Blow comes back from military service to Slutsville, Middle of Nowhere" to even get me to start the VN up.

I've played some seriously good RPGmaker games over the year, the best ones aren't adult games though, well a few were but not the kind of adult that show up on here.

It's not the engine, it's the authors.

RPGmaker is a powerful tool. If a game plays bad, it's on the dev. It takes time to learn it, but it would take even more time to learn unity, etc.
When I started out working with it, I've made several mistakes blaming the engine for them. There are some engine/plugins gimmicks, faults, but once I've got used to it, I rarely make mistakes now compared to constant backtracking and fixing the code like 1-2 years ago.
I even see some devs blaming the engine for their faults which myself did in the past.
Is it better than unity? Probably not. I feel like unity would be overkill for my needs with its complexity. It would require years of learning for the same gain, except maybe to have a slightly better performance. It could be an extra step to professionalism when you start codding the game yourself with very specific demands for features, but nonetheless, I like RPGM editor. It makes development easy and accessible. Everything is in 1 place.
As for features, it can do anything I need and has the same features and more than any other standard Renpy game has except the text rollback function which is possible but not worth the time adding.
I have custom message box with changable graphics during the game. Moving mouths, blinking eyes, nameplate change depending on who talks, saving and loading during messages, all the other vn functions (hide box, text log, skip etc) scene gallery, and many more. Is it a good engine for visual novel? No. But if you're interested in mixing VN with RPG or having an interactive environment, world, it's pretty good. You can even create function to travel between the scenes and clicking on pictures created on the scene to run the code. I don't use sprites and map walking myself, instead I made the game to jump around the scenes with interractions on mouse click (or finger if playing with android).
The only downside is poorer performance on very low end pc and mobiles and lack of proper preload tool. The engine loads graphics and audio on demand instead of preloading on the scene which makes stutters, but it's only noticeable on very low-end hardware (or rather the hardware which needs replacement). There are tools for that, but I never invested time on that. Some didn't work with my project running with 200 plugins and I dropped the idea. It's not a big issue. The other issue is that it performs poorly with full HD 1080 because of how it draws the graphics, but it's fine. As a dev I have to consider file size too, so 1600x900 is fine for me.
These are probably the only two issues I have and the first one is probably fixable with more time investment.
Rpgm features are rarely used to their potential especially in porn game development/projects. To repeat my opening sentence, poor gameplay is on the devs.
The engine is capable of pretty much anything.

I like JRPGs such as Dragon Quest. It works pretty well in a game where the main character gets stronger over time and is on an adventure. It adds more to the “game” aspect in contrast with something like a VN that’s mainly focused on the story.
