Patreon Is Hardening Their 'Adult Content' Guidelines. Discussion Thread

So, I want to be mindful not to mention any specific names of various adult games, but yeah this seems like only a few titles are getting nailed, while potentially 'far worse offenders' are doing business as usual so far...

I can think of one game in particular that uses chemicals to alter the behavior of the gals in it, and it has incest with mother and daughter. There is another game that I just checked where there is a pic of the naked daughter right on the front page of their Patreon.

This seems to me like Patreon is picking a few well known 'examples' to rattle the chains of the rest of the adult game developers, hopefully to get them to 'clean up' their pages, as suggested a few posts above. Nonetheless, IMHO it's best not to leave anything to chance if you are a developer. Just because someone hasn't been nailed YET doesn't mean it may not be coming later.

As for why this is happening now, there are a few reasons that have been suggested. A request from the Feds has been one, and it disturbs me that Patreon flat out says that they will 'cooperate with law enforcement'. They should anyways, but that sounds like a pretty strong hint that anyone offering pedophilia, etc. in their games, concealed or otherwise, well there may be trouble ahead for you.

Requests from partners (PayPal, etc.), shareholders, etc have also been suggested. To be honest I think it's all of the above. That and the U.S. now has an administration that is pandering to the religious right, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind having another 'win' to talk about (i.e. see we are cracking down on child pornography and other illegal sexual activity). Said administration has been making A NUMBER OF CHANGES to things, and the Justice Department in the US is now a lot more gung ho about things than they used to be...

I won't get into the politics any more than that, just understand that the atmosphere in the US is much different currently than it has been in the past. And keep in mind that Patreon's headquarters are in San Fransicso, California, USA.

So what started this whole mess? Why did they started cracking down now. I remember someone wrote an article about incest stories in amazon that resulted in the purge, forcing many writers to move on to goodreads. How about here. Was there an article written or something?

I guess I'll never understand why people (and powerful people, at that. Behind big money companies) care so much about what fetishes people have and try to criminalize porn so much.

I see explanations of who may have forced Patreon's hand but I still don't get why the fuck these powers that be give a shit.

I was on an un-named porn site recently and came across some videos aimed at incest but all the titles with a family member in it had "not" prefaced before the family member. So a title like "He gets it on with his sister" was now "He gets it on with not his sister", and all the videos were like that. As though someone has systematically gone to lengths to keep the content there but do the necessary to show that it's NOT depicting incest. And that's on a pr0n site so I can understand a mainstream site like Patreon wanting to tow the line and not attract any trouble.

Aside from being slightly less well known is there any reason devs can't just move their projects to IndieGoGo or OffBeater?

Given how this has been playing out i'm not (yet) too worried about patreon completely shutting these guys down, but as others pointed out this is affecting peoples revenue stream, and it's going to affect their game development time frames as well since they have to go about fixing this BS, so if that's the case why not just move?

I see a lot of people blaming the right, but most of this seems to have the fingerprints of the left. They’re not specifically cracking down on porn. It’s mainly focusing on rape and incest (which again, many on the left would say are the same). Maybe this is fallout from the Harvey Weinstein thing and growing complaints of rape culture. If it were the right, I think they’d be less focused on consent.

There's people (physical people) flagging the content manually. This means it goes in waves. Fenoxo has far far worse content on his game that raise several red flags, he's the top adult patron earning the most and he's not been suspended yet. Just wait and see like everyone else, there's no favoritism by the Patreon crew, they simply don't give a fuck about what games you or i like.

what's it matter if the fictional character was underage or if it had incest or rape or bestiality? it's a video game these aren't real people or animals. is the fcc fucking stupid or something?
