Patreons have voted to cede any form of oversight which was very generous, people back then have warned that this would remove any significant outside pressure on the developers and this is exactly what happened. Even the most disciplined people can only reach their maximum potential when they have a healthy amount of pressure and order in their work environment. It's a delicate balancing act between no pressure at all and burn-out, but either approach is detrimental to your performance and state of mind.
They could have set a bimonthly release schedule with regular status updates if they felt so strongly about the monthly update cycle, but just completely abandoning all accountability, feedback and regular interaction was a cop out instead of actually being motivated by a genuine desire to see this game blossom. I can sympathize with that because we all like to take the easy way out, we all know the constant struggle against your lazy self, but that's also why I know that you often need to push yourself or need to be pushed a bit to truly achieve remarkable things. Either way, I'm fine with waiting, but definitely believe that people voted not only against their own interest but also against the best interest of the developer back when the decision against a clearly defined public development schedule was made.
