At least give him the beneficent of the doubt. He has a slap stick way of writing, (he had a penis fairy in ILD for christs sake) so he might just be good at ridiculous dialouge. I say kudos for stepping out the box and best of luck to the dev. He's one of the last good ones out there and deserves it.

Well I'll continue to support him like I am doing now. I've consistently said that he has great writing but his best stuff has been like the mother /Catherine scene in ILD. He can write very deep without heading into parody. Of course I might just be adverse to sleeping with zombies . . .

His gift is the ability to create rich characters, meaningful events, and clever dialogue that ride the fine line between absurd and believable. The balance is so perfect that any one of your neighbors could be these characters under the right circumstances. That was where he drew out the humor. By creating something completely ludicrous in a realistic setting. Characters whose quirks you just want to get to know better, see them over-react to new situations, and listen to the unbelievable foolishness of their past. Feeling it all weave together into a single completely unconventional but perfectly-threaded person that could anyone you work or go to school with.
The reason we praise this so highly is because not many writers can do it. Maybe we doubt his ability to make a good zombie comedy just because no one has done it yet. I'm sure it will be fine. Might take a few updates for him to get into his groove (ILD was the same).
I'm confident he will make it work. My only skepticism is the decision to use 1st person instead of 3rd. I mean, if ILD was in 1st person, we wouldn't be here talking about the game right now. Changing the perspective would destroy the quality of the storytelling. Frankly, I think it's a big mistake and he is under-estimating how important it is to keep it in 3rd person. Most of the people voting probably haven't read enough to be able to describe how that perspective affects how they interpret the story. Or, more importantly, how they are forced to interpret the story through a static viewpoint and inner-monologue telling them how to feel. Like I said on his patreon, there's a reason trashy 3DCG devs mostly use first person - it's stupidly easy to write since you have total control over the reader's aspect, and just uncreative and lazy as fuck.

This i can agree with. I think 1st person games should be limited to true RPGs for the most part. I find it less appealing when being told a story, rather than walking the path of my own.
@Adoringfan mentioned to me a while back that devs usually do this as a shortcut in Visual Novels, less time in 3d studio and what not. But this isnt the case right? His patrons voted 1st person?

well the only really good zombie comedy I've seen is Zombie World and a porn version of that could be quite funny.
We voted for 1st versus 3rd and I believe 1st won. That being said the fact that it is used as a shortcut (since you only have to render one of the characters in a scene as opposed to both) was brought up as a factor in the discussion. I think some hoped it would result in more renders per update if they took less time.

I respectfully disagree as it actually depends on the story being told and more importantly HOW it's being told. Some stories work either way while some work only one way and others only work in another. Just depends on what the story is that he wants to tell as to whether or not it works (also, I would have voted for the DiCK story myself as that just sounded waaaaaay too damn funny to pass up). Regardless of the method, I am looking forward to his next game due to how incredibly well he did with ILD.

I would say his art is holding him back from hitting the "mainstream" hard. As mainstream as this genre gets, anyway. You gotta have that curb appeal to lure people in. Once they're in, he has no problem keeping them and ILD's small-but-rabid fanbase attests to that.
I know I, personally, just like games and stories with erotic elements. I don't want sex games. Just games with sex in them. Subtle difference, but, it's what allows me to not care about the art because it gets the job done. The mainstream is not as forgiving and that first impression is crucial because a screenshot on a -chan board is not going to show off the storytelling.
