There shouldn't be any problems using the assets on this site. I created a new folder where I download and save the assets from this site, to keep them separate from my legitimate assets. I also go offline when I install them, although I'm not sure that is even necessary.

If you manually install them it doesn't matter; if you are using the auto-installer just check "work offline" option.

This is a stupid question, but the whole naming/version/numbering in Daz3D is just confusing to me.
Genesis is a figure platform, and Genesis 8 is the newest one, but Genesis 3 seems to have a lot of content.
Victoria is a popular 3D female model, and a lot of 3D female models use it as a base.
Victoria 7 is for Genesis 3, and Victoria 8 is for Genesis 8, but they don't look exactly the same, and of course have different bases.

So if I find a specific character model I like that is on the Genesis 3 figure platform, and uses Victoria 7 as a base 3D figure model, but I would rather use Genesis 8, I have to see if the artist has updated their specific character model to Genesis 8/Victoria 8? Or is there really no reason I should try to stick to Genesis 8 just because it seems newer to me?

Edit: And once I buy a specific character I like that is built on Genesis 3/8 and based on Victoria 7/8, I have to also buy Victoria 7/8, *and* figure out which hair the character has in the shots if the artist hasn't bothered to list the assets they used for their photo gallery?

Yup, you got it all correct. The naming conventions still confuse me sometimes. One of my pet peeves is trying to find out what assets where used in the ad for something else. Sometimes I want the model wearing the hair, or the outfit worn by the model. The web store is very inconsistent with providing this info.

I've made the decision to only buy G8 models and assets to start off with only "Newer" stuff. But there are still good assets for previous gens, so you'll have to make your own decision on that.

You can update previous generation assets to work with Gen8. Clothes, hair, poses... Just search google for it.
There are even some clones (gen3 characters remade in gen8)

About the names of the models in Daz: In the beginning was Poser. It created daz site only to sell stuff for Poser. The first models for Poser were called Millennium. There were 4 generations millennium models. The first 2 generations are long dead, you can find very rarely something from 3rd generations, and there are still lot of items for the 4th generation incl for the updated version 4.2. The millennium models are usually marked as V4 (V4.2) and M4 (from Victoria and Michael I guess). Then Daz decided to make own models and thus started the Genesis line. There are 3 generations of genesis - G1, G2 and G3. As You can presume the G1 is defunct, but there are still a lot of items for G2, as well as a lot of scripts or direct adjustments of the clothes and such to be able to work with G3 too (but this is not guaranteed). Also the later version of the Daz Studio include so called "Clones" of the older models which on theory should allow the stuff for older versions starting from V4 (M4) to be able to use the "auto-fit" function for use with G3 (but again this is not guaranteed). And at last because many users were frustrated and were protesting, when the new model appeared, Daz decided to unify the whole model line, so the Millennium models started from Genesis 1, G3 respectively became G7 and the newest model became Genesis 8. Still, for the purpose of compatibility with the older stuff, nowadays largely is used the next naming convention: If you are using the name of the models they are V4, V5, V6, V7 and V8 (from Victoria) and respectively M line from Michael. At the same time if you don't name a certain model but the whole generation, you still use Genesis 2, Genesis 3 and Genesis 8. So if you read in the description of some product "morphs for Victoria 7 and Genesis 3 females" (for example) this means those morphs are tested on Victoria 7 and the basic Genesis 3 female model and should work with *ALL* the Genesis 3 based models *IF* they are not grossly deformed (enlarged, reduced etc). It is the same with V8 and G8 females, as well with the M7 and M8 and G8 females and G8 males; also there are some product which are marked to work both with G3 females and G3 males *or* G3 females and G8 females or even with all the 4 models (G3M, G3F, G8M, G8F).

Thanks! Holy crap, lol.
On a related note, I'm guessing that the level of customization/ease of modifications depends almost as much on the specific 3D artist as it does on the base figure model/character base? Some of the individual characters look like they have a ton of options, and others seem more basic in what you can change easily.

If you decide to try and make stuff for daz you can submit your sample work and wait for approval or rejection. Often the rejected artists offer their work to as well as some other lesser sites. If you produce adult content you can offer it at as well as to Renderosity. As for the options once you make the basics, you can easily add zillions of option - textures, morphs, poses, variants of the basic model with slight different etc. some of the options are easier to make and some require more profound knowledge how exactly the Daz Studio works. Of course this should be reflected in the price - but for example it is easier for me to make textures or poses, but while I can easily make hairs too I don't like it, so the prices the artists set actually largely depends on different factors. And besides Daz has non-stop promotions with 40-50% discount.
PS. I am not a Daz artist and don't intend to apply.

All updated characters have been renumbered to match, so Victoria 8 is for Genesis 8, etc etc. So just stick with the 8 stuff. 8 is mostly backwards compatible, meaning daz runs a script to clothing to make it fit, there are a few problems with it though, skirts get kinda messed up. Old poses won't work for G8, but there are a few scripts you can get that will convert them to G8, and these work great. Hair is kinda messy if it isn't G8, but it can work if it isn't long and comes with proper adjustment sliders. There is a script to convert clothing to Genesis 8 which should fix issues with things like skirts, capes, etc.

Any item on the stores that says it is for G3 AND G8 means it is actually 2 items, one for each version.

I buy only the G8 characters, and try to stick to G8 clothing and hair, G3 clothing that doesn't have a long skirt, and any pose set. Also some G2 outfits, but they can be really iffy, especially since anything pre-G3 doesn't use iray shaders. But that can be fixed if you edit the surfaces, but then hopefully you have a large selection of shaders.

Just found the Parameters Tab that lets you morph/combine features amongst the Genesis characters you have installed to personalize your own and my mind is blown.

Not only this - from this tab you can make your own poses. Somewhere in the upper comments I posted a link to PDF tutorial explaining dumbproof how to make own poses including and how to use Inverse Kinematics (IK) - it is a lot of fun!

PC. There are more ways to make poses too but those 2 are easiest to learn.

the ability to get acceptable results in a moderate time frame with software that has a far more friendly learning curve than the alternatives, frankly Daz has democratised 3DCG games, can't say that about very many pieces of software.
at the cost of having the same old ugly CG looking characters spat out in overused tropes and themes. I look forward to the day actual artists invest their time...

Some of the female characters are really ugly, as the most of the male characters, agreed. But you still can morph nice (and different) looking heads from the existing heads. As for the props section there are a lot of very serious items.

I'm not all that worried by Daz's inherent look, i don't consider it ugly per se just stylised and as such you pretty much have to take it or leave it. The repetition annoys me though, i hobby around in Daz a little and it's not hard to get hold of some decent slider packs and construct a character or two, Zbrush original characters are a different thing entirely, any dev who puts the time in to sculpt from scratch deserves a good helping of praise in my book.

It's never going to replace high end 3DCG like Maya, but to be honest drawn western games don't look that much better most of the time so i'm OK with Daz and the way it's opened up the H-game market to Devs who otherwise wouldn't be able to create a game with visuals at all, i'm a fan of AIF but some images are always nice. Yeah plenty of money grabbers crack out a few meh renders, sling together a by the numbers incest game and expect to be laughing to the bank, but once in a while you get a little gem like acting lessons or milf city and i don't have a problem wading through the dross to get to them.

LOL... The "Latest Updates" page is full with games version 0.001, 0.02 etc:)
But yeah - the best you could get before was softcore ports of japanese games like Knights of Xentar and such.

I remember playing GoblinBoy's meteor for the first time which had old Gen 1 Daz images, looking at them now they aren't much but at the time they were the first images i'd seen in an AIF and frankly i was amazed, it's all relative, which i guess means all the shoddy CG makes the good ones look even better.

I consider it playing with ugly dolls, zero artistic skill required. I can't fathom why anyone would support games on patreon that use it, its cheap, lazy, bad bad bad.

If that's how you feel then fair enough, however most of the community on here is at least apathetic to Daz, generally Ok with it or in favour of it to a degree, i know plenty prefer drawn art to Daz art but i think you may be in the minority on this one.

To be honest though there are plenty of other methods for visuals that people use, your not going to go without any time soon.

There are some great photorealistic items on ArtStation. I have a friend there who used about 70 nodes (Blender nodes, shaders in Daz) for a single pair of sneakers. But it took him 2 weeks to make them. If you are in mass production you simply cannot afford to spend so much time for a single item. That's why in the pro-company the artists have separate tasks - some make the conceptual arts, the others make only this or only that etc. And it becomes matter of cost which individuals cannot afford.
