I think he got in way over his head with all the possible routes, and their variables, and couldn't find a way out.
If I remember it correctly (I've slept since then) a lot of the routes I'd tried didn't even have a corresponding scene to follow. He defaulted it to follow the routes he thought you should play and not actually what you chose much of the time.
