How is this different from things like open relationships or polygamous relationships? In an open relationship, partners are free to fuck whomever they please, which differs from a harem because it lacks the committed relationship aspect. A polygamous relationship is one where everyone is in a romantic relationship with one another. You may find traces of such things in this thread, but no game will focus on that aspect.

Harem is usually used as a catalyst for other fetishes. Alone, harem is just vanilla+. Most developers will use different partners to explore different fetishes or different flavors of the same fetish. So the best way to categorize harem games is by the most common settings, themes, and fetishes.
