That is the downside to the Patreon system, because it's a monthly income rather then one time payments, like with crowd sourcing... And there is nothing to guarantee timely development using the Patreon system... Enough fans sending in small payments, adds up each month... But, when it gets up into the thousands, or tens of thousands, per month, then they better be hiring peeps left and right, and pumping out content really quick... Because there is no excuse when the income is that high... A major top of the line rendering computer, or more than one, could be purchased with just one months payment at those levels... So that excuse is out the door... If someone is solo developing and making that much bread each month, then something is definitely wrong, and red flags better start flying... They can afford to outsource some development at 17k and 30k a month, and get that thing made a heck of a lot faster at that point...

If someone is making that much money per month, especially in poorer countries where that much US money is an ungodly amount, and content is not rapidly being generated, then it is probably a lot more about the greed then the art... And those fans may want to re-evaluate who they're giving their money to...
I totally agree with you. In my opinion devs that don't increase the amount of content per update and don't hire more people when the incoming clearly allows them to are not worth to be supported. In 3rd world countries 2k $ is more than enough to live with comfort.
Akabur is one of those, he is making almost 5k $, but he was at 9k $ yet the amount of content generated didn't changed at all...

That is a sign of either a con or greed... As I said in another thread, there is a sucker born every minute... And it's truly sad when they get away with it...

In some cases it's both, and also incompetence. Sometimes is easy to see that a project simple won't work...
Good thing is that we still have a few good developers.

Milfy City - #2

Jan 30 at 3:33pm

Hey everyone, I just wanted to give you a quick update. The progress on my new game is going very well.
Stats for today:

- 830 renders!

- 19 animations!

I should finish rendering the final scene today and will move on to complete the animations starting tomorrow.

We plan the release somewhere at the beginning of the next month. (1-10th February?) Everyone who pledged for January will receive the game.

If you have any question regarding new game just ask :)

Thank you all again for your continued support. I couldn't make these games without your help :)

A little devil's advocate if I may.

You say if the income is high enough they better be hiring people left and right to get content out quicker. But there is no 'rule' or 'law' that says you have to hire more people just because you're earning more. If he is content with amount of work that gets done either working alone or working with at least one other person (as implied in his Patreon goals), that is his prerogative. Also he has already met all the set goals he put out. Therefore, if people who decide to support him after the fact his goals are complete, in my mind at least, have to at least be content with what he is putting out to even decide to support him in the first place knowing the creator has already met their set goals.

A few things, and these are things I did not realize before I started getting involved with creators on Patreon and got hired as a writer. Besides the fees and stuff that Patreon takes, very often if someone is making a pretty big chunk of change on Patreon they have to pay taxes on it, in some countries the taxes are ridiculous, and can run up to 50%. Then there are often international fees to actually get your money as well, so some creators may be looking at around half of their actual take home money each month.

It's from that where they have to hire people, and to get someone working full time, that is not cheap. Multiple people adds more and more costs.

Now I am not saying that some creators don't seem to deliver as much as one would expect based on the amount of cash they pull in, even after all of that. Just realize it ends up being a lot more complicated than "hire a team" or "do more shit".

From what I could find out from ICSTOR and discord it seems like it's going to be a big launch. I know his last two games felt rushed, because they were, but for one thing ICSTOR actually finishes his games unlike some devs. I'm looking forward to his next game and don't mind supporting him even though I wished he would have spent more time on his last two games.

In most countries, there are usually local (state) and main government (federal) income taxes... And technically any money made from any enterprise is taxable income... Only time when it's not taxable in the U.S. is when it's service only income... But in some of these same countries you're talking about, 1000 U.S. dollars halved down to 500 when translated into like Russian rubles would be 28000+ rubles... But then it could be a worse exchange rate like exchanging it to EURO's would only be 400 euro's... All in all, that is still a lot of money... But then some of these authors get upwards of 4000, 8000, 10000, 17000, 30000+ U.S. dollars "per month"... Even at 50% that is still a lot of money, especially in the poorer countries... Heck, CEO's for some smaller LLC companies don't even pull in 30000+ per month, before taxes... So trying to make it seem as though some of these guys are still struggling, when pulling in even half that much, I don't think so...

In the U.S., the average annual income for a two-income household is at most around 59000 for one year, before taxes... So if a single U.S. Dev using a patron site, is pulling in lets say 8000 per month, that is 96000 per year before taxes... Even if that dev's spouse was helping him/her out, so now it's a two-person income (not necessarily for tax purposes depending if it's a legally binding spouse or two single people), that is still way more then the average for that one house hold (house hold income means combining all incomes together for everyone living legally in that same home)...

All I am saying is that it is a lot more complicated than it looks, and the amount of money someone gets ca LOOK like a whole lot, and in some cases it is, but the reality is far different. You example BTW, 96,000 in the US, before taxes is actually about 20,000 UNDER the average for a married couple filing joint tax returns, but that is semantics.

I'm just saying the amount coming in is often both under what you may see at the end of the month especially, and is a lot more complicated than it looks. It varies from dev to dev as I said before, and some use their patreon income well and some do not. But if you are essentially trying to run a dev studio at even $30,000 a month, it's still going to be a small scale operation with income that is anything but stable. Now if it's one person, pulling in $30k a month, and that's it, that's in no way "fuck you" money.

And hey, again, you think someone isn't delivering compared to what they are pulling in? Bitch away, you may be right, you may be wrong. I'm just trying to add context to the whole affair.
