Winwar wont let me add mods to the game because its not a zip/rar (its a .bit) is there anyway to convert the download to rar/zip?

As you found out it's a .7z, 7Zips own type of compressed file. Bit is part of the folder name, as it's the 32Bit version of the game. You usually extract compressed files (unless told not to) though.
