Why use 3D renders instead of porn clips/pics?

Having read numerous complaints about renders being badly done or too time intensive to make, I was wondering why they are used at all? Seeing how most of the games already strive for a photo-realistic look with most of the action taking place in common locations like homes or offices, why not just use the real thing?

3D renders might be appropriate for games with interactive gameplay or fantastical settings or character design. But that's not the case with most games on here. It can't even be explained as a artistic/creative choice since most games are just going for ersatz photorealism.

Imagine a drama or comedy with normal human characters in everyday situations done entirely in (bad) CGI--it begs the question--"Why?"

To create unique characters and situations. With porn pics from the internet most people have seen them 2000 times with a variety of flavor texts. That instantly breaks the mood of a game. It's the easiest way of creating a porn game, but also the one that will create the most replaceable characters and situations. It's a lazy shortcut but not a way to create great games.

Nothing takes me out of a game like inconsistency. The only thing that comes close to inconsistency is when I'm reading 30 lines of dialogue with not a single shift in image. The reason we all came to games is that story doesn't matter to porn. You'll never find porn images that tell a good enough story consistently enough to make a quality game from. The amount of time and effort that goes into 3D models may be a lot, but the result is so worth it.

Mainly because games usually have very specific situations and finding images for every situation would be a nightmare. One can do a reasonably good job with a picture-to-scene approach, when the development see a good picture set and write a scene for it, but the other way around doesn't work very well. Evsn more if there's a character that will appear in many scenes, the only way to do that is to pick a bigger pornstar and that will also create the problem of dissociation between characters and actresses.

'Cartoons' & 'renders' are also not subject to the same posting rules and limitations as 'real people photography' is on most sites.

actually having an issue with that one as characters and assets re-use in too many projects are a serious threat this might happen with 3D renders as well...a certain grey shirt...the daughter of DmD...the freakin shower used in every second 3D-game...you get the point it feels like you see the same pornstar in a different role...

As to why not use real images...it defeats the purpose of being creative as can be for one...as said before most situations can't be displayed using pics&flicks from the net ( look at lifeselector...it's bad...and no matter how "interactive" none of it deserves to be called a game) The last man might be the closest thing to a game using real actors without having the feeling that it is a collection of an unrelated porn collection...and as far as
ersatz photorealism
goes...part of the appeal of games in general might just be that they are close but not too close to the real thing.

A common theme in the responses is that renders allow for greater creative freedom; which, while I agree in theory, I have yet to see in practice. Most of the scenes in games consist of two to three characters hanging around living rooms, backyards, or offices, and just talking. And the sex are mostly just the ubquituous oral, vaginal, and anal. There are no crazy physics-defying poses (at least not intentionally) nor are the scenes composed in such a way that'd be difficult or impossible to replicate in real life--nor hard to google, e.g., redhead blonde modern living room. Skimming through the previews for popular games here, I don't think there are any scenes that wouldn't have a superior photo replacement.

It's also true that renders allow for unique characters. But again, it's simply not the case in practice. I don't play many games here and even I've already seen the same characters (down to the outfit) appearing across multiple unrelated games. As I understand it, models are mostly bought and not created ad hoc. If this is the case, surely there are far more porn stars than existing 3D models to choose from.

I think Wife Trainer (my personal favorite) is a great example of a game that uses real pictures instead of renders. It is fairly well-written with compelling gameplay to boot. Most of its scenes are exactly the sort you'd find in games with renders--e.g., bedrooms, offices, coffeshops--but with the benefit of having real actors and setting. And the best part? It's a first effort by an amatuar developer who doesn't even have a patreon or charge anything. Personal enthusiasm no doubt plays a big part but I imagine not having to buy 3D models nor learn posing and lighting probably made it easier as well.

Given that people are complaining about renders taking upwards of hours per image. And googling, no matter how high the standard for consistency, would take at most a fraction of that time. 3D renders seem like a lot of unnecessary work for an ultimately inferior product.

2 problems. 1, you're not playing enough games. 2, this doesn't address the matter of consistency. If you only have sex scenes in your game. Sure, you could replace it with porn. But you'll never have any connective tissue. Parental Love has the characters go on a hike and have a picnic, as a family. So in order to show that scene, I'd have to choose 3 porn stars, 2 that look like they could be my daughters and 1 that is more mature, and a male who go on a hike and have a picnic. Simply put you're never going to find that. Especially not when I have to also take them all out to dinner at a fancy restaurant a day later.

Again, you're not playing enough games. There are a few that are definitely the same character recycled. A lot of people have recreated D from DmD. Her look is actually relatively custom. She is not a base model, but an amalgamation of a few models with sliders changed, If I recall correctly. Also, if you're not playing enough games you might run into a lot of new games that are just using base models. However, I'm a part of a 2 development teams, both teams have completely unique characters.

Again, consistency is still an issue. I don't care how many scenes the porn star you have chosen is in, if you're using her scenes you're limited in scope.

You've never complained after a days work before? Just beccause the work happened doesn't make it not worth it.

I get that you like porn images. However its not worth the sacrifice. Go check out Game Legends. It is a short Kinetic Novel I was responsible for writing. The models are recreated from BB *again a game with really custom models, our artist was simply a fan artist who had remade them. He had already made the images, and as a result I was limited in my writing by the scenario he had laid out. It isn't my best work as a result. It is still hot as fuck imo, but it would have been better to cater the art to my writing than to cater my writing to his art.

If we made the switch to writing games and using porn images, we'd begin being limited to writing scenes that fit the porn images and never again be allowed to explore anything outside the porn set.

Also, you'd never be able to make Coceter Chronicles without art instead. Demons and fae creatures and futanari women abound. That game is definitely the best game I have played. I know tastes are subjective, but the fact that the game managed to immerse me in a fantasy scenario without excess exposition and also fleshed it out well enough that I could totally, if I wanted, take and use it to create any story within its world, makes it an amazing feat for any world, but especially a porn one.
