Why do game devs bother turning off cheats in Renp'y?

It's always a slight irritation that ever time I get a Renp'y game that I have to go and take 10 seconds to find the console00.rpy file, open it, crtl+f and type config.console = False and change that False to True. If people don't want to cheat then all they have to do is not press shift+o, if game devs don't want people to cheat then fuck off cause I don't like grinding (except for Destiny, I'll grind for months on Destiny if they went back to year 1).

i agree, its just stupid as we know that cheats is something people want and no matter what they will get it one way or the other.

I don't mind games with a little grinding but I don't enjoy spending a majority of an h-game grinding to unlock content. It's really annoying when it's not that much content like the what if adventure time was a 3D anime game i posted in general due to the serious lack of h-content. I found it in the wrong section of 8ch.net under HTG (Harlot Trainer General) and honestly for the h content I unlocked, the effort was not worth it. That being said the game was fun so the h content was definitely overshadowed by the game itself. The game has 3 bosses for the Finn side and it's planned for maybe 2-3 more for the Fiona side which is unlocked after completing the Finn side of the game which currently only has a beefed up and one move added version of the 1st boss on Finn's side. But back on to the subject. I play so many Renp'y games nowadays as it's a popular tool and unless the game features a device or powers for mind control at the start then the grind gets irritating. Also I no longer play Destiny due to not having a PS4 or X1 (refuse to call the xbox one Xbone), I used to have it for PS3 but Rise of Iron receiving a price tag left a bad taste in my mouth after I was one of the people telling others to stop bitching about the $40 price tag of Taken King.

I agree with you, I know they want to player follow their way to play, don't want cheat make game short.
But the problem is if it only left grind or something unfun, why play their way?
I think cheat just an eye for an eye to devs. :p
If someone cheated on game, and make it boring, that should be their own problem.
Btw, every time I got renp'y game, I will just extract it, see code and change it. :D

Yeah for each new game I have to change the console to True and add the options.rpy file so I also get developer mode to see the variable names

If i get around to it i'll just make a small script like a .bat I can double click that will do everything for me

there are many reasons to try cheating...

first there is curiosity, what is in the game, what could be done... show me the content
second take quicksteps, if there is only boring or waiting time
third the author designs "his" way of playing... but this is not "my" way... can I change it (thats the best reason in my opinion, to enhance the game... look at skyrim... the original game is something you play 3-5 times... but a modded skyrimgame you play years after years... and "modding" would be like cheating (sometimes)... so, after trying to cheat your char and you like the game you start to enhance it, make it better and better... maybe for yourself, maybe you share it with others, too and give back, what you gained (pirated) in the first time

most cheats will be give you "godmode"... and therefore killing the fun after some times... so there is a natural cap to cheating... common sense... you can do it in steps... light advantages at start, respect triggerpoints, some ingame-functions instead of full cheat-code... and the game is much more fun as the original one

I'll be honest: In porn games I cheat, if I have the chance. This is porn, not some esports competion or achievement for your Steam account. I appreciate a challenge in other games, but when it comes to porn games, I prefer a difficulty level, where one hand is enough for the gameplay ;) I really see no reason why you shoud turn off cheats in a porn game.

config.console = False This is default option.
Dev do changing config.developer = False for the black background between scenes :test:

I'm a Ren'Py dev, and I'm more of the, its your game now break it if you want to, camp. That said, I understand that some devs really want their game to be experienced as intended. And that's what it usually boils down to. They disable things, cheats, rollback, autosave, etc to force you to experience the game in a certain state of mind.

I agree. First playthrough, and depending on the game, second, third even 10'th playthrough can provide a good and whole experience. That said, most games here are not in a complete state. meaning it's a slog to keep doing the same grind, version after version. For usually little to decent amount of content. So cheats speed that grind up, making people get to the point they need to get to that point again. (This from the fact that most new versions can break saves, requiring a completly new playthough)

Yea, not turning something on is different than turning something off. I just always assumed that the dev just never took the step of enabling the console rather than making a conscious decision to disable it and say "No cheats for you!" I figured it was laziness or even ignorance more than anything, and never even considered there might be some kind of aesthetic motivation to prevent cheating in their precious, precious game. Haha now I'm irritated at them for the extra work I have o do! :)

Usually skip still works though. Unless they've changed the dialogue you should still be able to skip through older scenes in ren'py and then move to where you wanna be. I agree grind is an issue, but its an issue with the game itself. Grind is what a developer does when they aren't creative enough to come up with a logical reason for their two characters to want to fuck each other, so they make you sexually harass an unwilling person until finally they're so tired of your shit that they fuck you.

In short if you're tired of grind, stop playing and supporting the project. There are plenty of good, story driven, games out there now. Dreams of Desire, Wicked Choices, Depraved Awakening, I Love Daddy, and more all have plenty of sex plenty of characters, and story instead of grind.

Grind is what a developer does when you need grinding beautiful woman ... Grind to excite the player is an art (it is difficult to comply with the measure, some are even afraid to try it:test:).

When people say grind I don't see that as being the same thing as teasing the player over a long time, as Mr. Dots has on DMD, or like My Sweet Neighbors seems to be doing with the daughter in its game. That's story. When I talk about grind I'm talking about sims like MotH, BB, Chloe18, etc. Some of them make the grind bearable, but it is still a repeated task with no value outside its reward. Most make you repeat the same task so often that even the sexual ones lose their spice, because they're no longer special. That's not going to excite a player.

Knowing you can press Shift-O to get a console, and then knowing what to do is one thing.
Accidentally pressing Shift-O and then thinking the game is broken is another.

Having the console disabled, is the safer and more correct option. If you want to take training wheels off, that is up to you.

Nice thread dig.

Console should be off by default, since you're not "entering cheats", but altering game variables and switches.

I understand you're talking only about DAZ3D (you can create a lot of images).
For an example: Trainer Witch by Akabur (it have grind and a litlle images but this is good game).
