A vast majority of games on here originate from Japan, especially if they have a completed tag. Its a big world and japan is a small island nation, what is up with the majority of adult gaming coming from that country?

Japanese culture is rigid, the names are very foreign, and most games have translation issues. Being a pervert in japan is some kind of great shame, while in america it just warrants a fuck off and mind your own business. Saying you like a girl in japan is called a confession, and is immediately returned or rejected. In western culture its not a big deal, you can ask a girl out before if you even know if you like her. Its something you got to put up with I guess unless you dont like completed games with hours of content. Porn industry is huge in USA but video game industry is too feminist and liberal to try something like that mainstream.

The reason you tend to see more "Completed" games from Japan as opposed to the United States is due to a flourishing market for such products. In the United States, there's several various laws that make the sale and distribution of such products simply not near as feasible from a financial standpoint, regardless of popularity. Generally speaking, when it comes to companies and their products, liberal or conservative leanings have very little to do with things. What matters most is profit margin and the bottom line.

It's also a matter of how they distribute their games. Right now our western market is small and somehow patreon restricted which makes whole development people dependant, while in Japan erotic games are being sold as a completed products just like a normal games. If you're a 1 person studio and you want to show your game to the public you will probably finish it faster that way. For smaller devs I pref Patreon model but for a succesful devs (games like BB,DMD) I would love to see their games sold when being completed, without Patrons changing their original ideas.
When it comes to culture, it's just their thing. I really wouldn't call them prudes or whatever. In USA or Europe talking about or perceiving erotic things is different. Western people talk about it all the time. But japanese culture is built around sex so even if they might seem much more conservative it's probably the most perverted country in Asia if not on the planet in my opinion.
Law is another thing as it was mentioned. Western culture is much more conservative when it comes to those things and our laws are restricting. Europe even as EU is just a bunch of different countries and to sell something you have take into consideration laws of the other countries. And other countries are mostly against such ideas. I'm not from USA but I suppose it's also a matter of conservative culture. It's hard to introduce a new sexual-related idea in a country with such ammount of conservative weirdos.
All in all everything depends on a perception. Right now whole western market is probably smaller than japanese but it will change sooner or later. In my opinion it's like 10-15 years when our laws and distribution models will be polished enough to compete.

They're an industrious nation with applying themselves woven deeply within their culture. When they want to do something for a living, they do it professionally and establish an industry around it. Porn in Japan has been fairly tightly controlled for a long while and their culture is deeply rooted in pictorial representation so comics, animation and in turn "sex games" with pictures are easily accepted by Japanese people. Whereas in the western world there's historically been a lot of stigma surrounding comics and animations as just being for kids, so sex games with characters portrayed with comic style representation are less accepted. It's even apparent in the way games are currently being produced, the Japanese are continuing with their traditionally drawn (although technologically enhanced) art whereas the western world seems to be pushing for a more realistic representation with 3D rendering. Although this may be due in part to the ease of producing renders for those with little artistic "talent" over employing someone to produce professional work.

From an economic standpoint, none of this is actually true. The US has most of its stores online while Japan is usually routed to actual stores that sell this very shadily. Think of it as the trip to NY in the 70s with a whole bunch of XXX porn stores downtown versus now which is a corporate haven of commerce. Changing standards have changed tastes as America's markets became more corporate.

From a historical standpoint, the adult market has had 20 years while America's is more or less just coming out with the internet. You can have established voices from the anime (they got unions) while America's markets for adult gaming is very VERY sporadic. Also, Japan's political climate has had 20 years of neoliberal policies which kinda established Reagan-esque type policies even under Abe.

Final point is that Japan's land mass is 4x smaller than the US. Millions of people live on an island the size of California.

Think about distribution of Japan vs America. Now do that for adult games without internet... Yeah...

It's because you can actually SELL adult games in Japan, unlike in the US, without much trouble. In Japan, porn games are pretty damn normal. You can go to an shop and they'll be there. In the US, there literally is no platform for you to sell porn games. Hell, even localized VNs that have 18+ patches have to jump through a few hoops on Steam. It's VERY FUCKING HARD to sell porn games here. And if news gets out that a developer is creating and selling porn games, the media WILL be on YOUR ASS. Your reputation WILL be ruined and your fucking career depends on whether or not the gaming community is chill with it.

Basically, it's a huge risk for anyone (big) to make a porn game or even sell it. The only porn games you're going to see from the western hemispheres are going to be off patreon and will be using things like Ren'py or RPGM.
