Thinking what they are doing is quite smart.. by making the game a lot less kinky than their previous works they can avoid unwanted negative media attention etc. If adult games are to go big time AAA then the first games out of the 'stalls' need to be fairly tame so that it becomes normalised to wider society which will pave the way for everything else shortly after. If I was a developer with an eye to be a big player in the future adult games industry I would be thinking along these lines. If you want to push social and societal norms in order to create new markets then push it a small step at a time and appeal to as many people as possible and exclude extreme content in the beginning. There are still one or two generations out there that think 'computer games are for children'- in another 5-10 years this idea will be forgotten. Then if I was a really greedy share holder I would recommend the kinks as extortionately priced dlc. Truth is the rarity and stranglehold of someone's fetish the more they will pay to get it. Expect purchasing M rated games to become much much more difficult for minors in the future.

I love this game just for this simple possibility it gives to the whole market if it's succesful. It could singlehandly start a mainstream AA game development of erotic games as well as bring more eroticism into AAA games like GTA (which is an obvious choice imo). As for a game itself I can't really say much except for the fact I like this type of shoot'em up games. Erotic part looks cheap as hell (everything is shining, unnatural and looks plastic) and I don't expect anything more than a simple harem fuckfest with male protag. Probably the best type of game that can attract masses sadly. I wouldn't even bother with it if it was just a Patreon game but I really wish the best to it at this point.

Mainstream will never go porn/adult games. You can use your own GTA reference for reason why. Online transactions/monetizing. If they want most cash return on invested cost then porn/adult games get the short end of the stick. Some small game studio focused on just adult/porn games could probably make a nice living from it if done right, but it would never turn mainstream.

Over 2 millions of budget and release on a biggest gaming platform announced by most of the gaming sites and magazines seems like a good mainstream release. I know most games won't go for it and it's hard to expect erotic content in every game. I was saying mostly about games where it would logically fit but so far was too tabboo to implement it. Mainstream is everchanging and since it was mostly developed by the USA and its market it has many of American fixations like sexual content one. Since america doesn't seem to be a leader anymore it's obvious some changes will come. Erotic games can go mainstream - Fate series is one of the biggest anime brands in Japan - but it's not a point. With such a succesful release other devs will try and tabboo can be lifted for most of the world. To be honest if not for the States I bet we could have something already. Just look at Polish Witcher and its content and compare it to basically any American production. I'm not saying there should be mass production of AAA erotic games (I would love to tho) but there should be some as well as erotic content shouldn't be censored and avoided to the degree it is now. Mortal Kombat 11 is the greatest example of extreme content and clear fixation with burka-like clothes on every female replacing their traditional costumes.

CD Projekt RED with their Witcher series (and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2027), never made a secret out of they are creating games for adults. (Which by no mean porn games). Where adult themes and even nudity and semi erotic stuff is included in the game where it make sense, story wise etc. So you could perhaps say CDPRED is mainstream when it come to "adult themed" games as long as you don't define adult as sex/porn. You also have (kinda) new kids on the block from Warhorse studios with their "Kingdom come deliverance" that also included quite a lot of adult theme stuff in their game. I guess them being Czech and border to Poland, maybe its a cultural thing
The "old" Bioware (before they got restrained by Electronic Arts), also had some mature content in their games. Like KOTOR, Dragon Age, even Mass Effect. Interplay back in the day when they had the Fallout franchise, Fallout 1 and 2 was packed with adult themed stuff. Even Rockstar with their GTA games had more "adult "stuff back in the day. Anyone remember the huge blowout from the hidden "Hot Coffee" thing? Geeeze. Parents blow a fuse over sex in a game, but "murder, death, kill" that's just normal.
GTA 5 had a dev/marketing budget of about 265 million USD. Making it the most expensive game to make next to like SWTOR that came out at staggering 200 million USD back then.
Problem with mainstream game industry today is, money is all. So many games even not multiplayer or online games get pushed towards some sort of "live service" monetizing platform, even though you might have to pay 60 bucks up front as entry ticket. This Subverse game might very well get gated behind some sort of "online login" wall to avoid piracy etc. Heck, if I had been a developer of any such I would for sure. The life of such a game would depend on more and more content to be delivered. So dlc's, costumes, poses, list goes on and on.
It's not really about who the biggest leader is. It's about where the biggest market is. The definition of a AAA in the game industry came to be in the 1990's, more or less as a way for development companies to show of (justify) bigger and bigger budgets. "Oh look at us, we use so much to make this game, its AAA good...".. I believe the end consumer should be the judge in that regard if they deliver the AAA experience or not. To many expensive flukes with an AAA label proves that.
With Valve allowing "adult" games (as long as you don't pull such "rape play" stunts and shit) and "age gating" content. You "as an creator" have a very good window to the world in regard of publishing factor. At what length Valve will allow said content, idk. But you have such games as House Party there. Wonder why not more "serious" creators on Patreon doesn't try explore it as an additional platform for revenues though.

Eastern Europe has completely different mindset than Western (not to mention States) especially when it comes to topics like tolerance, sexual freedom etc. and devs from such countries wouldn't bother with clear, marketing-centered censorship if it wasn't necessary. Rough themes like sex, secism, rasism are basically non-controversial at all in these countries. Tbh probably in most other countries as well except for the richest market of US and Western Europe. I remember like some western (I guess it was States) journalists were writing about this racist controversy of Kingdom Come that there are no black people there. This type of serious text on a serious site in Eastern Europe would ba taken as a joke. Literally. Old devs in general had more balls cuz market was still relatively underdeveloped. Parents and old generation was/is indeed the most influencial but I dare to say it's all about American parents. America has that incredible, puritan mentality when it comes to sex you can't really find in many other places and as the biggest player it dominated the market. Europe just followed. I hope it's changing now cuz Asia is much more of a player now and they don't really give a crap about those things as much.
Can't really say anything about AAA games except for the money that was used to develop them. I know plenty of AAA games I find much much worse than indie or AA games. To be honest Subverse is a AAA only when it comes to erotic industry cuz it's still not that much for a real AAA title.
I was wondering as well. It's a free money-zone if you have enough content. I wouldn't count incest games as they might be too controversial but even the simpliest games like Anna Exciting Affection could make much more than on Patreon without really risking anything. In a worst case they'll ban you. It's mindblowing for me. Valve clearly changed this market and it's clear that it's still in a phase it's being developed. I hope in a 5-10 years we will have real market on a real platform but that's just me wishing. Subverse miight be a milestone tho and I root for it.

The biggest incest game I played on Steam is Paradox's "Crusader Kings II", You can literally form your own religion where "keep it in your family" is a thing. Or just seduce your relatives and such. With the plethora of adult VN's on steam atm, I wouldn't be to surprised if there is incest content there as well.
If you look at recent RDR 2, there is a event in the game that got some disturbing bro/sis stuff going on. (Deliverance banjo level of.... )..

Forgot. The critic on the no blacks or not able to play as woman etc. The game is set in a historical setting with real world events of the world back then. But I'm sure that Steam would react sooner or later if it was flooded with games with subtle titles like Dating My Daughter, Big Brother, Keep It In A Family etc. I dare to say that incest is more controversial if presented in a straightforward way than rape and we know how Rape Day ended.

But their main argument was that it was possible because there is a 1 or 2 painitings of some black dude in that time. It's mindblowing when their agenda can't let people see reality. Even if you could play as a black guy in such a realistic game, you couldn't play like Henry cuz you would be treated like an animal and people would try to catch you or kill you. There was no tolarance back then (it's still much different than in western Europe). With woman it's more tricky cuz you can do it somehow but still, people would never give you such important missions and most bandits would try to rape you. I hoped for A Woman's Lot to be an alternate story but it wasn't realistic sadly. Female MC would have to pretend to be a man in some way. I'm still glad they do it but they should surely improve female models cuz they're all the same.

I like the debate but you guys are focusing too much on United States. Yes, they have a very puritan mentality but China for example is far worst. The kind of censorship we have there, about something as innocent as the female silhouette is just shocking. And China is the next big market.
But the problem is even bigger than that.
Because there is a problem inherent in the concept of adult content. The products for adults are by definition exclusive. In a world where the benefits rule, it is difficult to justify the exclusion of part of the potential public.
There will never be a real explosion of high-budget adult video games. The current situation can improve, new companies can be created, but that dream paradise where adult content is respected and valued as an option as valid as any other for entertainment, will never come.
But the problem is even bigger than that.
Because there is a problem inherent in the concept of adult content. The products for adults are by definition exclusive. In a world where the benefits rule, it is difficult to justify the exclusion of part of the potential public.
