I newer understood why anyone would willingly play a serious game using anything but a PC. Some silly time waster like Tetris sure. Those don't really benefit from the extra visual fidelity, high resolution and overall quality improvement that a big HD monitor and the latest hardware can provide. But an actual game with actual art and plot and gameplay very much does. And this is doubly true for anything relating to porn for very obvious reasons.

So every time I hear about someone actually using android devices to play games all I can say is a confused "But why?"
I guess not everyone is equally “serious” when it comes to porn games. :sneaky: (In fact I’m sure there are more people who are serious about Tetris in general.)

Plot is the same whether you have it on a big screen or not.

As for gameplay, it really depends. Most VNs don’t have much to begin with—it really isn’t a huge loss in that department to play on mobile.

For graphics, the two games I do play on mobile are text-based, but actually my phone has a higher resolution than my monitor :ROFLMAO:

You have got to be kidding. I mean... really? How? Do you like own a CRT from the 70's or something? Now I am genuinely curious.

Nah, but I was on a bit of a budget. In truth I have a laptop, and the display is 1366x768, while my phone is 1920x1080 (with a screen about 1/6 the size of my laptop’s).

I’ve been meaning to upgrade to a full computer, but it just hasn’t worked out yet. I’m still debating whether I’m getting a WQHD or 4k monitor when that time comes. Might even change to Mac for the 5k display.

I use my phone and tablet just to test the Android version of my own VN. Otherwise, I always play adult games on my laptop.
But when I go on vacation this summer, maybe I'll play some VN on my phone. Probably one of the ones I didn't play on the computer because when I play updates, I usually continue with the old save.

Can't say I have. Most of them aren't made very well for the phone screen and it's difficult to get into anything more text based when you have to scroll constantly with your thumb. Definitely prefer PC!

You don't need a 4K monitor to appreciate the fact images of naked ladies look better when they are not the size of a postage stamp.

Naked ladies also look better when you can’t count how many pixels they’re made of.

I tried playing some text based games on my phone once but they were a nightmare to control. Which surprised me. That and I'm playing porn games mainly to you know, fap, and it seems kinda counter productive to do it on a phone, and it's not like I'm gonna play Summertime Saga or what have you on the subway.

I did try to get a couple of Japanese VNs going since I thought it might be nice to play them in bed, but none of the ones I wanted to play worked on Android. At least not on my crappy one.

Ws testing my own VN on a cell phone a while ago. It was ok but I wouldn't call it an enjoyable experience.

Only on the PC. Its a whole lot more convenient, and the phone would just be much too small for me to see clearly and to read.

Personally I don't play much anymore in general (no time), but I used to play some android games, grew up a console gamer and still prefer to play relaxing on a couch (now with additional mouse and keyboard on my livingroom table xD).
Anyway, I think the result of the poll is higly misleading, there's a HUGE crowd dedicaded to android gaming, I've been active on some android gaming sites for a while and I can tell you there are a lot of androd gamers. Also judging by the download statistics of my games here and on other sites, the split android/pc is more like 40/60 sometimes even 50/50.

You can install Android APK's without the store.
Yeah, I can. But some other people don't want to bother downloading and installing apps this way. They probably need to enable "unsigned" apps in their security settings. Developers are well aware of those "lazy" people and this is why we don't like Android/iOS.

For devs it seems like the more important question would be the rev split between platforms instead of the absolute number of players. It's been a few years, but I remember normal mobile devs arguing over Android/iOS and people were getting far higher numbers of total users on Android but making far more money from iOS. It's just a guess, but I would expect something similar with Android versus PC since mobile users are used to free apps while PC users are buying from Steam, not to mention the relative cost of the platforms.

When it's all about money, sure android isn't that important, but on the other hand you can gain future supporters that way, or if you don't care about money, then it's clearly one of the biggest player base.
As a dev, supporting mac and linux makes much less sense than supporting android and yet, most devs make a mac and linux version, but not an android version, which is not really clever imo.

Sure, all thing being equal more players are better, but it's all about focus and priority of course. If you think Android is potentially 50% of your revenue, then it's worthwhile to put much more effort into it than if you think it's more like 5%.

Similarly, you don't need to do much more work for a mac/linux build right (at least for renpy, I'm mostly focused on Unity, so maybe I'm missing some nuance)? But to make sure the experience is comfy on a phone, you may need a very different gui and/or other significant changes, so I can understand why many devs avoid it.

It's true, yes, but in renpy it's a one time work, usually you make your UI and never touch it again. Unity and Unreal actually take away a lot of the work already by giving you blueprints/templates to use, even on the hardware side they give you almost everything code-wise. Though I'm not saying it's easy, and there are limitations like the file size, I've spend several days optimizing Bad Memories for android, but then again you only have to do it once in the beginning.
But that's all just for clarification, I think I've gone off topic long enough now^^
