Another month passes by and the release date inches closer, which means it's time for the good, old monthly update! As mentioned in the previous update, the Offcuts 0.4 release was planned to be around this week (ending on December 3rd) as I tried to work the release around my planned business trip. Things took longer than expected, so I'll have to push the release back at least a week. I have never managed to estimate a release date right before, so it's probably not a big surprise to many. I always try to reserve a good amount of personal time around any releases so I can quickly fix any critical bugs or other issues in a patch release. Still, no reason for despair yet, as I should be able to do another status check Pateron post next week once I'm back.

That's about it for now. Everything else has been pretty much said in the previous updates. Once 0.4 is finally out, there is more room for planning the next step and discussing everything else I have been working on during this long cycle.

As always, I'm not going to take any Patreon payments until 0.4 is out (I'll temporarily suspend my Patreon at the end of each month until then).

So, TL;DR:

* Next release 0.4 will have Alice's full storyline.

* Some new tech in 0.4: interactive 3D and pre-rendered movies, at least a few of each. When I get the pipeline (and my skills) working smoothly, next releases should have more.

* After 0.4 I will try out a bit faster release schedule with partial updates instead of releasing large, complete routes that take ages to finish. We'll see how it goes.

* Possible Steam release at some point after 0.4 is out. Steam has been pretty random with adult games, so who knows what can happen.

There's less than 24 hours for Stencilbits's "week delay" to be over... What will his excuse be this time?

• Unforseen "work situations" caused a delay.
• His cat pissed the external HDD.
• He forgot to pay his internet provider and they cut his internet.
• He overslept and forgot to update.
• He decided to watch One Piece and thought, I'll update it when I finish watching.
• Was involuntarily interned after Zack Snyder confirmed the end of the Snyderverse.
• Version 0.4 never existed and he's been gaslighting us for years.

I remember the last time I played Offcuts Miley Cyrus was like 12 and was Hannah Montana... now She's in her 30s. My guess is that Mikey will do her Miley/Hannah Midlife Crisis tour at 43 and we'll still be waiting for Offcuts 0.4 with Alice Route! Prove me wrong Stencilbutts!

1: His favorite houseplant died so he is taking a break because of its death.
2: Someone stole the towels from his laundry room and now he is hunting them down.
3: He was playing for Hufflepuff in the quidditch tournament.
4: He was cleaning his ears with a Q-tip and put it too far in. Now he can't hear his alarm to wake him up to work on the VN.
5: He overslept.
6: His house was too cold so he had to go to the Caribbean to warm up before he got sick.
7: His cat ate his HDD with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

9: Stubbed his toe which caused too much pain to sit and work on his PC.
10: His PC was covered with 8 feet of snow in a surprise snowstorm.

12: The police raided his home and gave him a speeding ticket for typing too fast. Now the VN is delayed again because of speeding.

16: He spent weeks on the phone with the insurance company after his swimming pool caught fire.
17: He had to go shopping for the perfect chair to use while working on the VN after his other chair broke from overuse.
18: He tripped on the stairs on the way to his PC.
19: He saw a dodo on the way to his PC and had to follow it all around town for weeks.
20: He didn't know that he was allowed to work on the VN.

Don't worry he will return with a monthly end of the month news update like he always does. Like clockwork every year he does the same thing around this season. Says there is potential release date, and will have plenty of time to work on it due to some arbitrary holiday break. Then claims he was actually busy over the break, pushes the release date back a week or two. Never delivers then goes back to a monthly news update about how he is ready to release it anytime for 6 months, then repeats the holiday spiel, then back to the month updates on an endless cycle.

Health Update

This is another update post, a bit late as always, but finally here nonetheless. Another deadline missed, so at this point I feel I should share some news that I have mostly kept under wraps until now, although I'm sure some people might have already made some guesses. I'm a pretty private person, so sharing things from my own personal life always feels a bit clumsy. I tried to delay writing this post as long as possible, hoping that things would settle on their own at the last minute, but of course that didn't happen.
So, straight to the point. I have been struggling with my eyesight for a while now. At first, I just chalked it up as normal eye strain as I mostly work with computers all day. Some eye exercises every now and then with some rest during weekends usually helped. Until they didn't.
After some eye pain episodes at work, my doctor diagnosed some kind of ocular hypertension. Nothing too serious yet, eye drops, rest and limiting screen time seemed to help. Still, writing or reading anything longer than a few paragraphs was difficult for a while, unless I maxed out the font size.
The more severe issues started last spring and I have tried to keep this secret until now. Even back then, Offcuts 0.4 was mostly ready, just missing some finishing touches, so I thought a delay of a few months probably wouldn't hurt much. Rinse and repeat a few times after that as the situation didn't improve much. Things started to look better again a few months ago and I was finally planning to actually release Offcuts 0.4, until another eye pain episode last November sent me to a specialist eye doctor, who suspected glaucoma.
Glaucoma can be a pretty severe eye disease that can eventually make you blind if left untreated. Needless to say, the potential diagnosis was and is a shock to me, especially as I'm not even that old yet. Fortunately, the diagnosis is not certain yet and it can often take a long time (even years) to confirm as it's not a cut-and-dry diagnosis. There is still a good chance this is something else and much more harmless. Meanwhile, there are also some good treatment and preventive care options available, some of which I'm already using.
This has been another messy and stressful year for me, trying to juggle my job and hobbies while trying to manage this health issue. Still, finally writing this post and putting things out in the open feels like a big relief. Repeatedly trying to guess and miss any deadlines and other predictions felt awful and I don't blame anyone who has felt frustrated, but at least now you know the reason.
So, what about Offcuts 0.4? Fortunately, it has been mostly ready for a long time now, I just haven't managed to write (or read) much since last spring. I have wanted to give the script a final proofreading pass for a while now, but reading a script of over 50k words in my current state is pretty rough. Still, even in the worst case I can eventually wrangle 0.4 together somehow, eyes closed if needed. However, I currently try to prioritize my day job as I'm worried about how my condition might affect my work in the future in case the worst scenario happens.
I have no plans of giving up yet, but the next few months and doctor visits will be important to see where I'm heading (pun intended, I guess). Still, I have no plans to stop doing this little hobby unless I absolutely have to. I'm optimistic and I'll try to use my winter vacation to recover as much as possible, so expect a next Patreon post at some point in January. I'll see you in the next update. (Pun intended again, funny how many of our language idioms have something to do with sight.) Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone despite the bad news!
