Always music and sfx off because I don't like silences between scene's or I just don't like the music so I use my own music...

I find a lot of the Japanese games to have annoying voices? I don't speak Japanese, so it's just jumbled sound, and a lot of it is squeaky 10-year old annoying girl sound (because lolis and the general Japanese favor towards high pitched voice). I don't find it sexy or fun.

The only games I play with sound either have music that I really like (Crusader Kings, Stellaris) or I need the environmental sounds to know when I'm about to get jumped by a bad guy. All other times, I have 10 other things going on, and I cannot be arsed to listen to the game.

Several games appear to have grabbed the same background music, which is annoying. Pretty sure there are sites where you can obtain old music that's long past copyright protection and is now in public domain.

Yeah music, and sound effects (doors, rings..etc) are a must have for immersion, of course some games does it far better then others.

But i don't like moaning.

I am not against music, but please do not turn it on the first start of the game, let the player enter the menu and adjust the volume. Some developers do not give the opportunity to turn off the music every time you start the game or skip it. They probably think that they created a masterpiece that everyone should listen to. In fact, this is usually a piece of crap synthesized on a computer.

This is actually something I never understood: Music/sound settings always on maximum in almost every (renpy) game. Why?
I don't have music in the game (yet), except for the main menu theme, but the first thing I did when I included sound was turning the settings down to a reasonable degree.

For the same reasons some devs uses the empty daz models (black ones) for the background characters : Laziness.
Because everything in max is the default setting.

The black characters are actually more of a performance thing. Not saying that some use it out of lazyness, but rendering several unique characters in daz is really heavy performance wise, it takes ages to render and needs a lot of vram (we're talking gigs per char) so stripping a character of all textures and clothes and instancing them boosts rendering performance a lot and reduces vram usage by a heavy margin.
But yeah, for the sound settings I suspect either laziness or simply not thinking about it.

I really like how Anax's games set the mood with music in the background.

Even if they dont really do much, it at least makes the game feel more professional, and that's always a plus.

But anyway, if you leave a separate slider for music/sfx then the player can just remove it if thats his desire.

In general i like música and Game OST, but a crear number of adult games use free libraries and that is a little bored, 5 of 7 adult games have the same soundtrack. (5 of 7) is a example and don't response to a real number of cases.

Literally everything can be improved with music. As long as the music isn't too annoying or jarring, ambient music should only improve the experience. I'm currently browsing free music sites to implement some in my games if possible.
90% of Music in VNs sounds like its recorded straight from a Elevator. I pretty much always mute Music.
I think that's because most of the music comes from free music sites. That and the fact that you can't have music to be too intrusive.

For the most part I don't mind music, especially when it enhances the atmosphere of the scenes for me. Only time I mind it is if licensed music (or even familiar sound effects from other games for that matter) is used because it takes me out of the game.

I mute most of the time since audio is really hit and miss with most VN's (I think Being a Dik is one of the few hits where it enhances the game).

I see quite a few people in this thread also mute, but I've also noticed a lot of new games that come with no audio get called out pretty early on for it.

My taste in music is such that I often just have youtube running in the background instead of the game so I mute as a matter of fact not to mention I hate wearing headphones so if I don't want my roommates complaining about the noise again my only real option is to mute.

Also any game that has main menu music at full tilt as a default is 9 times out of 10 going to be a instant exit and delete.

It depends on the music. When the music used is the same McCloud theme for the 100th time, i´ll mute.
I decided early on to add music to Softlinxxx, even though the variety of royalty sci-fi/cyberpunk free music would be significantly lower. It´s way easier to get contemporary music for sure.
But it´s manageable and the music from the creators and/or channels are credited as some ask for backlink.
There´s some work involved finding some real good themes but i think it´s worth the time. If someone doesn´t like
the music then the player is free to mute and listen to something of their own choice.
As for FX i try to implement them when it fits the scene, like having someone knock or hearing the engine start of a Porsche or
screeching tires, laser go pewpewpew, punching fists or some kind of electronic wave sounds when one of my Naughty Bits starts scanning some stuff.
No moaning sounds during sex though. I find them to be most disturbing when vibing through a good VN or game.

Music can really enhance the experience, but it can also ruin it. If a dev decides to add royalty-free music to their game, the least they could do is browse for 5-10 mins and try to find a song that isn't as widely used. According to Wikipedia, Kevin MacLeod has composed over 2000 songs. I believe even he said that he can't remember all the stuff he composed, and yet people still seem to use the same 5 super popular songs from him.

Hell, you could probably just search generic terms on google like "sad royalty-free music", "romance royalty free music" and other stuff like that and find something that sounds nice that hasn't been heard a million times already.
Also, this is just my preference but some sad or dramatic scenes are much better without music. There were a few scenes in some games that made me laugh my ass off because of the music alone.

If you want a character to come across as serious and intimidating in a scene, it's probably best to just cut the music. You know shit gets serious when the cheery royalty-free music suddenly stops.

I mean, it depends really. Sometimes the music annoys me, other times it's nice mood setters. And sometimes it's SO god damn cheesy. I swear, I've heard the same porn music in like ten different games this year alone!

Music is best when used correctly. Incorrectly, it can ruin my interest.
