Hey all!

I have been sitting in unity for 3 years. I came up with the idea of making a VN game with the help of mainly unity and DAZ3D. I want to ask people more experienced in VN for advice. What to do what not to do, and so on.

If you are making a VN in Unity and you aren't very familiar with the engine, I would recommend Ren'py. Otherwise, your question is a bit too open ended for any particularly good answers.

To do: Make an enjoyable game that is well written.
Not to do: Make a bad game.

Unity and DAZ I know very well. I work with unity from 3-4 years, but i never make VN. This is why we ask for advice.

What kind of advice are you looking for in particular? In terms of gameplay, one thing I like in VN's is the ability to re-read what was said so I don't miss anything. The game being written well and being an overall enjoyable experience helps well too, haha

The most important things to keep in mind when making a VN:

1 - Story
2 - Likeable characters.
3 - Good grammar.
4 - Meaningful decisions.
5 - Story
6 - Appealing graphics.
7 - Ability to roll back your decisions.
8 - If using Unity - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD OFFER INSTANT TEXT!
9 - And most importantly, Story.

Thanks! I was expecting something like that

Do you rather recommend rendering screens to DAZ 3d, or build scenes on Unity itself? Because it's also an issue that I've been thinking about a little bit

I'm not too familiar with unity, would the latter be rendered by the end user? If so there are obvious advantages (like realtime 3d interactivity) and disadvantages (they need a decent pc, inferior image quality) so it depends on the requirements of your game.

If you are rendering the shots in either case, see which render engine can give you beautiful results more easily. This will probably be Daz iray.

Sure, I must take a look to ren' py, I think if I know unity well, this engine is propably be not a problem for me.

You don't need to switch from unity if you render in daz, I'm talking about the render engine not the game engine (though perhaps unity game engine can also act as a render engine). The workflow for most VN's on this site will be rendering a jpg or png in a raytraced render engine like iray (built into daz studio) which is then used in the game engine (unity or ren'py) as a background image.

My recommendation, do a tiny project (one scene with the main features you will use like dialogue), try it out in unity and ren'py and see which you like best and what will work best for your game. My prediction is you will find you can do more in unity as it is a fully featured framework but ren'py will save a lot of time as it is specialised for VNs.
