It can depend on the specific game's length and theme, but personally, I find that games with 5 to 10 love interests offer a better balance between variety and focus.

Maintaining fewer than 5 love interests can be ideal for games that are shorter than 1 hour, conversely, having more than 10 love interests may be suitable for games with a plot centered around building an empire with a harem.

I'm into group sex and orgies. So I choose 10-20. But it depends on how well this is done. The headmaster has a far bigger LI-cast only in first and second row, but it is still very well done, as the girls have quite different looks and personalities and their own stories and there is lots of interaction with the headmaster and between the girls. Polyturnon in contrary with it's cast of 50+ girls has an interesting idea, but doesn't catch me.

Male MC: If it's a power-trip type of game, I want as many corrupted harem members as the dev can make believable and distinct, with enough character development that I care about their corruption. Overwhored has dozens.

In the type of game I had in mind like VenusBlood or Sengoku Rance, once you've essentially captured / mindbroken the girls you can visit them at your leisure, of course this is at the cost that they won't be interacting much with each other and there won't be as much content for each of them with MC either.

See, if you give good art, approriate amount of variety in sexual content like more positions clothes and such, having a small cast of women works perfectly, and in fact takes all the benefits from what having alot of them.

Mgqp is an example of why alot of girls sucks, due to the 410 companions you can recruit, the budget will be spread thin, and some girls, which deserve far more cenes, have 1 IF 2, and some (like mage succubuss) have over 6??

Then theres LT, which fits the descrption of infinite love interests.
In LT, it works due to the world building and customization of the game, giving you infinite variability to your imagination at what kind of race you can fuck, and just a good boost from the sexually promiscuous nature of the world, because casual sex is something people seem to go for more than fully romantic sex.

Some games have some 20 girls, but if I like maybe 4 of them, it's not much difference to me than just having 4 girls.

3-4 is also the maximum you can meaningfully interact with at the same time, both in a conversation and in a sex scene. Add more, and some will be pushed out to the periphery of the convo or orgy.

4. My answer is 4. But even 1, if written well, is perfectly fine.

Hmm, the question isn't as easy to answer as it seem.

I tend to follow Rafster , not on the number, but on the meaningful part. A game well done can be interesting and playable with up to 10 meaningful Love Interest, but in the same time 5 is already too many if the LIs are all blank and mostly copy/paste of the others LIs in the game.

What matters is in fact the answer to that question: When they'll play the next update of the game, will the players be able to quickly remember who "that LI" is ?
As long as the answer is "yes" for all of them, then there isn't too many. But the instant where there's a doubt, there's a least one LI too many.
