Ironically, everyone expected the Spanish Inquisition. They were very adamant about informing persons suspected of heresy with a note nailed to the door informing them of a future visitation. It should also be noted that the Inquisition were wholly opposed to inhumane treatment of prisoners and believed that coercing a confession would invalidate it. Much of our modern judicial process (primarily investigation and interrogation) is derived from the practices that were put into place during the Spanish Inquisition.
