What a pathetic excuse, anyone who do any coding or rendering for more than a month will have like 5 backups of everything on 3 different storage devices.
Everyone in my computer engineering class have at least a pendrive with latest and/or important stuff, most of them have also cloud storage, a copy on home PC and ofc. original copy on uni PC.

@EdgeOfShadow Don't you know? As soon as you declare yourself a porn game Dev, all the lightning seem to struck into your home, powersurges constantly fry your PSU which always turn out to be the faulty ones of their series and in turn fry everything in your PC, all the time but at least twice a year. If somehow not, then the mailman gets lost with your new GPU no matter if he never does when its just bills, if its something you need to work on your game... its a bound spell, it confuses the mail services, they miss the street, often the whole continent in fact if its you they have to deliver.
Your relatives then starts to die off. Parents, siblings, the family dog, the family cat of your best friend.
When your rig works then you get hopsitalized. Can't access the internet then, for at least a month or two.
You see, this is a high hazard job that takes a huge toll on those who choose it. But luckily for us there are heroic men and women out there who sacrifice everything to bring us the lewds!

Well, I can quite believe the bad luck of the game devs.
Some days ago I tried to export a quite heavy 3d scene from Blender to a specific format, using a well tested plugin, which, btw, was supposed to do some of the light baking automatically.
Cool, right?
Well, my PC completely died. And I don't mean that, simply, it was slow. Or that it freezed while everything was going on in the background with no feedback for me.
No.
The yellow light of the HDD stopped to flash. The fans stopped to do that noise so useful to get asleep. After 30 mins without any sign of life, I was forced to turn off the PC the hard way.
When I tried to turn it on again, the splash screen started to flash on and off. I tried to not panic: "Come on, maybe the good old Ubuntu is just recovering what it can recover and cleaning all the rest." After some minutes I gave up.
Luckily, on a second try, things worked.
TL;DR even with some quite tested and resilient software as Blender and Ubuntu, just a simple 3d scene exporting created some big issue to my PC, which served me well for years, so it is no wonder for me that a lot of game devs have problems and "accidents".

wait... your power supply fried the whole system? and they didnt refund everything it broke? ever thought about sueing them? not just for the other parts but also for the work it destroyed? (should also be a sizable investment!?)
Anyone who knows why clementine continues to turn down advances at the coffee stand?! I've gotten through all courses and now she works as a stripper.
I agreeThat's easier? I suppose after you've done that on a few games it would become second nature, but I'll stick with being a save / load whore.

regarding "we'd be all making our own games" ... I wish it would be that easy to create a game
... I guess I would probably be able to do the coding after some initial work with a scripting language like renpy, but I am not much of an artist and would have to rely heavily on tools with prebuild (probably expensive) models/graphics, etc... it definitely sounds nice to quit my job, start a patreon account (or better a website of my own with no patreon-like restrictions and an option for those interested in the game to donate money in exchange of regular game updates... the outcome should be more or less the same but at least the xxxx guys from patreon would be cut out)... but... at the moment and as long as one has a job it's so much easier to visit places like f95zone and happily download already existing games - thanks a lot for that possibility by the way
