I don't think people knew about her existence, but there were rumors/legends about the mountain, where people who went there would disappear. In the beginning, the game talks about how you need to go there for some reason. There was, maybe shortly after, a scene in the witch's castle, where she had this girl living with her, as her slave sort of. I believe I remember a scene where MC talks with the witch. Also, I think MC was some kind of king.
