osanaiko I've spent over an hour checking out the assets of this game, and it doesn't seem to be made with Naninovel, Fungus, or anything like that. It really looks like the VN engine is built by the developer themselves, which is pretty impressive. They've nailed the Ren'Py style and even included settings I haven't seen before, like control over FXs, or all the character configuration stuff.

Yeah, it's a custom engine - I know this because I have the git source tree sitting on my local hard drive :ROFLMAO:

I've been volunteering as proofreader for Marvelous Lunatic for more than 2 years, so i get to see the dev progress. In addition to writing the engine, he also manually creates 80%+ of the 3d environments (and kitbashes the rest), does all the rendering (posed in daz and rendered using Octane), and writes the story/dialogue. I just help out in editing the text into more native/natural sounding English, and help talk through plot design (although he very much has control of all the stuff in the end, I just make suggestions)

edit: oh and he's also written some quite sophisticated Unity editor extensions for dev/testing that let you jump around the script/set game vars, and even written a custom plugin for VScode that does syntax highlighting for his custom dialogue script. He's a very very productive programmer as well as 3d artist/storyteller.

I started my game in Unity, using NaniNovel, originally.

I would say I'm below average when it comes to Unity - did a bunch of AR games in the past.

At some point, I asked myself, "Scope?"

Since I was alone in the room, no one responded. I had to respond to myself, with the words, "Scope..."

My next step is to start creating my own AVN.

In the next few days, I'll set up a thread and document development times, posting updates and screenshots of my progress, and so. The main idea of the new thread will be to create a guide for anyone interested in making an AVN with Unity, starting from scratch like I was.

And just in case you-re wondering...
  • No, I haven't played all of them. Some I just dissected and cracked open to see how they were made.
  • My main focus has been to find out what mechanics games made with NaniNovel or Fungus offer, and to learn from them.
  • This has been a learning journey to better understand what kind of AVN I want, and can make, with my current programming skills.
  • I haven't spent too much time on those Unity games with a custom engine.

I hope this thread can help other people. Also, feel free to reach out if you want to discuss about developing AVN with Unity :)
