I'm wondering what your preference is when it comes to still images. Do you prefer 3D renders or more of a Digital Art drawing look and feel? I've attached two images as references as to the type of quality and style I'm referring to.

3D is best for me if the users that try to do this can figure out how to make it work properly, if not, then the other one will have to do, it is up to each users with how to do those stuffs.

If you do only stills then you should go with the 2d. But if you really want your work to be noticed you need to do animations with 3d.

I personally usually prefer well drawn art because it dosen't age that badly. Even though 3d renders and animations have improved a lot during the last years, there's still a long way to go until they are really realistic and thus they'll start to feel old a few years down the line, once there's better stuff around.
Well drawn art on the other hand can last decades without feeling or looking out of place.

Edit: Just to add, that's of course as long as we are talking about good and consistent drawn art. I'd rather prefer average/good renders compared to sloppy/inconsistent drawings.

Just a little more info on why I asked this poll question. I'm in the process of creating a game and I'm trying to decide what type of artwork I want in it. Since this is a one-person show, I'm doing all the c# programming, game design, story writing, etc. The first image I posted (the 3D one) was an image I created with Daz/photoshop. I just got into 3D artwork a few weeks ago but it seems I'll be able to make decent quality 3D artwork for it. This enables me to stay a one-person dev and do all the work myself (Keeps costs down).

On the other hand, I actually lean towards good quality 2d illustrations but there's just no feasible way I can do everything else I mentioned plus learn to draw (and draw good quality illustrations). So if I go that route, it's going to drive the cost up of the game tremendously as quality NSFW artwork isn't cheap. Expeassally when you need lots of them.

As you explain it, it seems pretty clear to me that 3D rendering seems to be the preferable way. Creating 2D games without drawing stuff yourself or without having somebody who is drawing as a team member is a huge risk. I've seen several games where the commissioned artist had to be changed for one reason or the other and it rarely goes well in my opinion - unless it's a small scale project.

Yeah, that's basically my fear. I've worked in the field of Web design, Graphic design, and Marketing for many years. Even contracting out for jobs in the field is a huge risk. Have to keep changing people until you find someone that can actually do the work properly and be consistent.

You're comparing your 3D art with a 2D quality that will cost you $300-500 a piece and will take about 1 week to finish. Usually artists who can draw like that and are fine with drawing pornography are already working on their own projects and making a lot from them. I'd go with 3D, there's still a lot of room for improvement but it's good enough as it is. Good luck!

it just vastly depends on your drawing ability. anything anime is straight to garbage, but unfortunately we never get anything else anymore. if we could have something like manara, serpieri, moebius, there would be no question. but all we get is second hand copies of manga that was created for cheap exploitation to begin with, so I prefer 3d 99% of time.

that said, just like 3d doesn't have to be top-notch to tell your story, the same applies to drawn art. summertime saga looks kinda bad, but it has a consistent style so it gets the job done. people in general pay way too much attention to what they think is 'good graphics', when it's mostly kinda secondary. it really only has to not be disruptive to storytelling and it'll be fine.

then the answer is simple, you just won't have enough time EVEN if you were great at art. I mean you can do it of course, but it'll take years longer that it'll already take. and unless the project is something personal you feel compelled to create, it'll just drown you almost certainly.

really, if you could draw well enough to justify the workload, the far better medium would be a graphic novel. just so you could use most of your time on drawing and avoid all the programming overhead. still a huge job done alone, but manageable. and you could guarantee the artist doesn't go awol suddenly. anything else you can change midway, but not the artist.

This. Same reason why we went with 2D for our own project. Same reason why something like Battle Brothers and Summertime Saga will be playable two decades from now, and AAA+ games will look like garbage. You can still watch Disney movies from decades ago, but anything with 3D shots ages visibly in as little as a few years.

Not saying 3D doesn't have its place or uses, but good 2D is timeless.

I prefer 3D but I believe that 2D has more chances of being sucessful (maybe because there's fewer 2D games?). But as I said I like 3D more. The only 2D I play is probably Summertime Saga.

That's how I wanted to compare it because (a) thats the type of 3D work i can create at this moment and (b) thats the type of 2d artwork I would want in my game if I went that route. I know its expensive but its the type of content I enjoy. if I'm creating a game, I want it to be as good as I can make it (as does everyone).

Right, and that's where the issue is. Time vs money. Do I just go with 3D even though it's not 100% the art I want for the game but its something I can create. Or spend a ton of money and frustration on finding a few good artists for 2D artwork. Money that i don't even have so that would have to come later anyway.

I agree with this as well and that's why I'm have a tough time deciding. Its basically a money issue at this point. Doing the 3D artwork would allow me to keep things cheap. The way I would want the 2D artwork done would be way more expensive. Plus, I would have to raise money first to even get the funds for it. Which in itself is a big undertaking. It seems like I'm only left with one viable option.

Go with 3D then. Make a good game, build up a following. Then you can leverage that to pay for a new project in 2D. There's no point paying for hundreds of dollars of 2D art unless you're independently wealthy and making a passion project. Especially if you don't have the money in the first place, and have to work overtime or an extra job to secure it. You'll burn out long before you finish the game.

Alternatively, try to find an artist to team up with who shares your vision. That's what we did - all 3 of us are IRL friends (one of whom does all the art). You can try looking for someone via F95 or even Reddit, there's plenty of places to search. Even 4chan has regular threads for this kind of thing. And you can always default back to 3D if you don't manage to find anyone.

Good luck! ;)

That's what I've been thinking here lately. Just do it in 3D, then switch to 2D if I get the funds. I was even thinking just stick with 3D for the whole game then when I get some income from it, start adding into 2D content. Instead of mixing and matching or replacing, just offer an (alternative view). Let the user decide if they would rather see 3D renders or 2D illustrations.
