If you don't try to fuck Mehande in the early void scene then the game doesn't crash and you can progress. I'm pretty sure that you're not really missing much by keeping your distance from her. I've had a few random crashes here and there since that one very repeatable crash, but nothing that a reload couldn't fix. The random crashes are probably due to bad pointer-related coding in Java. (Same thing happens to people who are new to coding in C++, from which Java evolved.)
Long story short, this is a playable and fun game. Don't let negative comments deter folks from trying it. What the game does, however, need is a guide (in-game, preferably, or at least offline) explaining various things ... such as what the ship upgrades (like sails and apothecary) do, and what the capacity limits are for the brothel (it's 8 before any upgrades, but you don't learn that important fact until you hit the limit) for each tier of upgrade.
As a professional software engineer I have some advice for the dev: you can never have too many mouse-over tooltips!
