In some renpy games i cannot see the help/preferences text, in this game i cant even see text when choices pop up.

The only thing I can think of is that you're missing a system font. Try reading/searching the game's thread to see if other people have similar problems/solutions.

There's something else going on... if it would just be the font then the textbox would still show up....

I'd suggest reading that and trying the different renderer:
