Update your 7zip and or get WinRar as alternative. You can have both running on your home pc without much hassle

Either your not trying the 7zip right click menu or you don't have it. If you select "Extract Here" as show in the picture 7zip can still extract RAR archives for some reason. This works for me at least.

7zip can actually extract RAR files that it can't open, at least in my experience. All you need to do is right click the file, go to the 7zip right click menu and select "Extract Here" and it will work.
