If I could do good 2d, I would have. But many of us can't, and 3d can give passable results with some training and amazing results for talented people. Additionally, the same quality which gives 2d its advantage, the uniqueness of the images, might be an Achilles heel if some players don't enjoy the artists' specific style. With 3d, for better or worse, it's simply an imitation of real life, as much as the artist can achieve it.

Bear in mind that a porn game or AVN is more than just pretty pictures or fluid animations. It's believable character, tension building, dialogs, pacing and more so the art is important but not the only factor in the quality of and erotic product.
By no doubt, a 3d render developer, if he has enough capital, could commission custom assets to make up certain downfalls, to a limited degree of course.

But for the point that games aren't all pretty pictures, true enough, what makes a mid-game great is being tied together by a good story with good multi-faceted characters. But even still, some fetishes are very visually based, which most of the time is very limited when it comes to 3D stuff.

Form my understanding those that prefer 3D simply dislike animations/art in general and stick to more realistic stuff.

I bet a big chunk of them would vote directly for live action if it was an option to create without the limitations of real porn. So it is less that they prefer 3D, but more that 3D usually gets closer to their utopic live action experience.

That's why you see many of those "3D enjoyers" complaining about koikatsu or non-realistic 3D stuff, because at the end of the day it isn't the 3D that they like, but the uncanny nature that gets closer to live action movies/series and so on.

I never really got the craze about realism... If I wanted realism... I'd go outside.

Yeah, I always cringe with live action adaptations, but they keep making them.

I guess that's the only way to appeal to a section of the market that assumes animation is unrealistic or made for kids.

God, how I hate these "realistic" 3D graphics that evoke the effect of the uncanny valley, and not the desire to jerk off. Most of these games are western visual novels in perpetual development in order not to make some cool game, but to gain subscribers to patreon. This shit has become too much here.

2D all the way. I tried playing 3d games here, but it’s just too uncanny and off putting for me. Hand drawn is just a whole other quality, even if the art is not all polished yet.
