Well, engine's free for a start, does 2D and 3D equally well if you know what you're doing... Problem is, performance improvements don't appear to have been looked at, as opposed to what's usually pressured for in a Patreon release (MOAR CONTENT... NAOW!), sooo... That's my guess.
Also, yeah, could make it in RPG Maker... If you had a version of RPG Maker and were familiar enough to get around its limitations (Some of which are annoying as hell or unintuitive to work with), whereas, with something more open, while you don't have basics already done for you, elements are easy enough to set up that you can quickly throw something together if you know what you're doing, and re-use code elements for stuff that works exactly the same.
So... There's good reasons to use Unity, not least of which is "It's free." But the tradeoff is that it's also easier to code things in a resource-hoggy way.
Unfortunately, not that I could see. That's more on the decision to have full-screen sex animations, which add an entire new asset set you need to introduce (or have a whole bunch of "this content doesn't exist yet" markers.) Time will tell if that comes through. In all honesty, I'd prefer they work on performance before trying to add more stuff, make what they have work better, but, as mentioned, folks get antsy if your update doesn't have MOAR CONTENT.

Hey it's like pussymon but it doesn't suck.
Edit: Now that I've actually played the game here's my real opinion. It's okay. It's biggest issue is obviously the lack of content, but that is sure to be fixed. Other than that the art and mechanics need some work. There's this one scene where a girls pussy reminds me more of split in her pelvis than an actual vagina. Not awful, but it needs work. Another concern is that you don't seem to be able to fuck any of the Oppaimon yet. Kinda concerning considering they've got at least three sex scenes already. One more to show off what would be a big feature of the game would make sense.
I am presuming it's just mixed up priorities because not having that would be a big missed opportunity.

Your file can't be renamed. It's stuck as a zip file. Tried to change in properties but wouldn't work either.

So far I'm enjoying what's been added. However, I can't seem to find a way to switch my party members. I keep sending out the first one in line. Does anyone know how to do this or is it simply not possible in this version?

I finally understand how the "It's stuck at the lvl 10 evolution"-bug works.
If you level up your starter pokemon to level 10, it evolves normally.
However, if you catch one of the other two starter pokemon in the forest and level it up to 10, your first starting pokemon evolves instead of the second starting pokemon, no matter what current level your first starting pokemon is. (Technically it can evolve with lvl 7 with that bug.)
If in that time you catch the third starter pokemon and level it up to 10 as well, your first starter pokemon that already has evolved will try to evolve from its second form (screen shows second form, text says first form) into its second form - again.
That's when the freeze happens for me.
In both cases, only the first starter pokemon evolved, there was never a evolution for the second or third pokemon.

Sounds like the evolution code is picking the first instance with a specific tag, rather than the specific Oppaimon listed. If so, that's a very odd bug, and you'd think they'd have caught that one much earlier than this. It could just be limited to the starters (Didn't get very far due to the performance issues and writing, so I have no idea if there's anything beyond the starters right now.)

There is not far to go. You have the starter city, a small "forest" and half of a second city.
All available pokemon can be caught in the forest. Even the starter first's evolution step…or is it second evolution step?...the first evolution?... Bahh, to much thinking. Gecko confused. Gecko leaves it like that. ;D
