Anyone else think the popular game list needs some purging :P

I could be mistaken, but I've always thought that the Popular Games designation is generated completely objectively by the number of posts in the thread for that game and the total number of views for that thread.
Yeah that is a good possibility, if so then they should really create another section for top games etc. Or something that helps hidden gems be more visible rather than buried in pages.

Agreed!

Does anyone remember going to old-school movie-rental stores, or even Blockbuster (in the USA) before it went belly-up, and there were "employee favorite picks" of movies to browse? There were DVDs (or VHS tapes for us olds) curated by the employees--some consisted mainly of popcorn flicks, others were obscure arthouse films, while others were a combination of popular and also lesser-known films. I remember finding some enjoyable movies simply by realizing that "If this person likes these movies I've seen and also like, and also likes these other movies I haven't seen, maybe I should try them."

I do realize that many active members on this forum routinely post their favorite games and top-10 or top-20 lists, but a more organized forum for "Top Picks" curated and moderated could be a positive addition to F95.

EDIT (There was a Seinfeld episode that centered around this concept... Elaine became enamored with an unknown video-store employee whose movie picks were sensitive and deep, but he turned out to be a 16-year old kid living with his mom lol)

A hero could always try to make a trial tread in the recommend section to see if it can work. Update the op every week or so with new games and images people recommend under certain criteria, like complete for some time or with less than 500 posts.

Popular games started out as a way to just distinguish games that were popular (views wise) but with the addition of more and more games the decision for adding games to the popular list comes with the need for said subforum. Son of a bitch being a prime example with dozens of threads on walkthroughs, or even BB which had so many threads that I had to compile a bunch of them into one and redirect them from there to their new location. New threads that are to be added will have to meet a lot more requirements than just views or replies.

Now regarding some points:
  • Removal of a game from that list
I haven't seen any valid point, just because a dev abandoned it for a while, if the dev was a cunt, if the game was shitty, it doesn't really matter, because this isn't the "Best dev section" it's the popular section, and a look at the most viewed threads, doesn't show any game massively slipping off the "popular" route. If we had a game that had 10 threads with way more views and way more replies that was on the popular section, that's a game worth looking into as to assess if the spot on the popular section is needed or not.

  • Adding of a game
We've had several games that came with shit ton of popularity and with time died off, not saying the games mentioned by you guys are following the same path, but it's extremely hard to judge a game based off of one build, and furthermore we have several games with way more views, way more replies (and other factors) that would be prioritized over these games. So, we'll wait and see.

PS: Not sure where the replies as a sole factor to a game being added to popular came from, but it's flawed, and as mentioned before, some staff would like to nuke some threads in the popular section to the ground due to spam and fighting, I don't think people spamming and causing fights will get staff to vote for said threads to be added to the popular section.

I guess that's all. @ me or quote this post if you have any questions or any feedback. :winkytongue:

Make a "featured" games that everyone agrees is top quality but doesn't get that much views or discussion.

I kind of agree with you, but just as many said, popular isn't the same as good quality.
And making a "Top Games" section, even if it sounds good, it will be pretty caotic.

Choosing what games are superior than the others is a pretty subjective thing, and I know that there exist some parameters (besides logic thinking) to know which thing is superior than others in almost everything, but lest be honest, how many people would think 100% objectivly to rate games for this "Top Games list"?

And even if we get a super elitist team, how many people would agree with them?
There will always be a group that will diasagree and say "Hey, where's *insert their favorite game*" and make tons of posts complaining about the list.
Lets stay with the popular list and let the "hidden gems" get popular by themselfs.

Just saying, please don't kill me :FeelsBadMan:

I agree with you, what could be cool, and I can't think for the life of me where I saw this before, is if the Staff would each have a personal subforum in games, where they pick 5 they really like to showcase. As games fade from their toplist, or they choose to look at something else, they'd remove and add games to that personal sub. Not sure how feasible it would be but I think it could be a cool way to showcase talent and be varied enough that everyone should get a few gems that fit their personal kinks.

I like the idea, more helpful than 100 000 posts in the Popular Games section asking when's the next update or bickering about content.

Maybe focus on some good new games/new devs, help them get more attention.

I would say you could do very different things for this.

Weekly, Monthly, Yearly, Mod and community recommended to some degree.

But you'd have to look into different ways to differentiate each category. Filters and such would be handy but also a way to get specialized stuff out of certain people.

I dunno if this forum could do it because it seems more likely to be something like a journalist blog type deal you're looking for.

@TCMS
I don't know our Staff's rule of a games can be and/or stay in the popular section, but my suggestion is :

--- how to get into popular games section ---
1. The Games had reasonable content, not short or masked it with grinding system. Also a pointless pictures data & size. It depend on Staff to determine. Some games have a short content, but the developer make each scene with new picture. Size is big, but content is short.
2. Reach ### of comments.
3. Reach ### of views.

--- how to stay in popular games section ---
4. The Games actively being updated.
5. Monthly ### of new comments. (minimum depend on Staff decision)
6. Monthly ### of new visit. (minimum depend on Staff decision)

--- how to be kick out from popular games section ---
7. In conjunction with no. 5, if the comment were exploited, make a staff warning. If continue, nuked the thread.
8. The Games reach final version, or abandoned, or not update in +3 months (3months -> according to MuttDoggy)
9. Traffic Visitor & Comment lower than what the staff had bare minimum set.

--- Where the once popular games go ? ---
10. Two suggestion.
10-1. Make a new section, titled "ONCE POPULAR GAMES". The Games whole thread & discussion removed to this new location. But locked the ability to create new thread in that games section. New comment still can be posted.
10-2. OR ... Just drop the main thread to the normal games section & if there's sub section for that game like walkthrough or fan art, mods, ETC. ... just send it to appropriate section. MOD's thread to MOD's section, Fan Art's thread to General Discussion ... other than that, either merge with the main thread or nuke/deleted it.

11. Games that has been in kicked from popular games will never be allowed to the popular games section, no matter if it's re-thrive for once more, but again all depend to the staff if they want to reinsert to the popular games.

In No. 10-1. The suggestion is to make life more easy to the staff.
In No. 10-2. The suggestion bring unnecessary workload to the staff, but cleaner & efficient to the site.

Why I think this POPULAR section need to be constant updated with new games ? ... the answer is to make the developer being appreciated & excited when their PIRATED games enter the HALL OF MOST PIRATED section. ... but I'm serious, at least that what we can help for this developer after we pirating their games.

Who decides what these "top games" would be?

We've all got different tastes and if we were to go by some people we'd have 0.1's like Milfy City and Melody in the top games section. I don't give a shit how good some people think they are no 0.1 deserves a top game spot. If they can keep that up for another 7 or 8 more updates, sure, but only then.

People decide of course, theres a rating system, a review system, they also have additional data like number of downloads etc etc, with these they can easily create top *Genre*, Most downloaded, Trending Games, Recent games, even something like a weekly voting system done by users (which would also bring a lot more interaction to site itself).

Sure it can't be perfect but it can be a lot better organized than as it is. Just gotta not be lazy you know :eek:penedeyewink:.

How can a game abandoned several months ago be 'most popular'? I don't get it. When was the last time the list changed? Are there really just no break-out games or quality games to replace any in the 'Most Popular' section? Are we in a 'dry spell' of popular games?

Is the "Most Popular" designation a self-fulling prophecy? Does a game get more comments / traction because it is hilighted as 'Most Popular'? Are more eyes directed to those titles based on placement there, so in reality, the titles in 'Most Popular' will never change?

I like the idea of a section for new games - a... (wait for it) ... 'Up and Cummers' section.

Could be interesting if they added something like a top 10 tab to the profile page where we could add links to our favorite games on the forums, then have a script scrape those lists and post the results somewhere dedicated to it. Could probably have results for different time periods too (this week, this month, all time).

I've talked with the staff in Discord. That finished or abandoned games ... the traffic actually still active. Until the traffic became low, then those titles will still stay in popular games.
Also the staff added that this is not about Top 10 Most Popular Games, it doesn't have limit how many games to be moved into the Popular section. What's matter, the traffic is high.
(Traffic = Daily Visit + New Posting)

The short polite answer is Aye it does! I am scratching my head at the popularity of most of them!
