Ya know, I tried to play this by blind-ing my way through the Japanese version once. There was no way to tell where to go next, so I always ended up just talking to everyone available until I found the right one, even if I'd just talked to them (since I wouldn't be able to tell if it was a back-and-forth talk-to-NPC bit). I ended up stuck quite a ways in because I'd talked to every available NPC I could find and none of them seemed to progress the story or unlock new areas, so I gave up and decided to wait for a transation.
