K-pop chapter 10 part 2 is up on Kemono!

This one had quite the twist. I'm fully on board with psycho Minji. Looking forward to learning why she's doing this, and what Nick is going to look like when he wakes up. I still don't understand the point of the earpieces though, narratively. I thought they were going to be so that Minji could mistranslate between Nick and the doctor, but that turned out to be unnecessary. All they've been used for so far is to allow Minji and the doctor to talk freely in front of Nick, but they could have just as easily waited until he passed out, or just stepped out of earshot.

I was reading it as the earpieces was so that Minji was keeping Nick in the dark... except apparently the drugs were gonna erase the immediate conversation from memory anyway, so I'm guessing we really still havne't gotten the "full use" out of them yet.

I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth: So glad that a character (Minji) is taking action and is actually motivated as part of the feminization. Really hope she's a more active participant in the feminization going forward.

Also, I wonder if Melissa is gonna address the different skin tones. The character models for the Korean girls clearly have a different skin color, in addition to other Asian features. For Japanese idols, I'd always thought about changing a white man into a Japanese gyaru/kogal could be a "realistic" path of race changing feminization.

The one thing that does "concern" me is how much of a transformation jump are we going to have? I'm all for a new face, as I do think the existing one isn't really passing (either as a girl nor as Korean), but I do kinda hope there's more steps in the feminization than this. Hopefully Nick isn't gonna end up as her final form this early (unless the story is already near its ending?)

We are 400+ pages into kpop. Around the same time the operation happened in Mirror too. We still don't know if its 100% complete or more or less 80%, but 800 pages later and the story isn't close to an end. Probably 8+ more chapters of Mirror :D

I really hope Minji is doing this for egotistical reasons and not for any kind of rationalization. Maybe she gets some kind of kick out of it or really wants to have a puppet for her kpop band. In contrast to Mirror I assume we will see much more active gaslighting from 3rd parties influencing Nick into a forced route instead of self-gaslighting that went out of control.

That would make sense, except the earpieces haven't been needed for this yet. Minji is already effectively controlling where Nick goes and who he sees without the earpieces, and the doctor would have told Nick whatever she wanted him to since she's controlling the doctor too. And based on Minji's dialog in this part when Nick is passing out, it sounds like he's going to be brainwashed soon (maybe?), which means the earpieces will never be necessary.

The earpieces seem multifunctional, but underutilized to me. It forces Nick to rely on her, speak in Korean, and affords Minji the opportunity to mistranslate as needed. From an outside perspective, I’m sure it really helps sell the story that Nick is a nervous little Korean girl that won’t do anything without Unnie’s guidance.

Minji could also play hypnotic audio through the earpiece, and Nick won’t be able to do anything about it. I could easily see this having a sleep hypnosis element to it. We already know Minji can hook them up to something other than her microphone.

But anyway, wow. This story has just taken quite a turn, and I’m starting to get excited about it!

Now re-reading this page it somehow is borderline CIA torture. Imagine you have something in your ear some 3rd party can control and play WHATEVER WHENEVER they want into your skull. Maybe it's just me, but this feels way more sinister than it might have been planned

Another K-Pop preview for a new part tomorrow, so I guess we're skipping AM and doing two K-Pops back to back:

So it looks like facial feminization surgery and vocal cords and/or adam's apple based on the bandages.

It also just occurred to me that that might not even be Nick. This could be a fakeout. That tank top isn't what Nick wore into the hospital, nor does it look like something the hospital would have issued him, and I don't recognize either of those other two people. Have we ever seen them before?

Nope, but I'd assume it's the manager of the k-pop band. At least I would bet on it. Some hardcore gaslighting incoming.

Some evidence that it might not be Nick:

1) Based on the fact the hair is long enough to be tied into a bun, either a lot of time has passed and the hair has grown out, or this isn't Nick, as Nick has short bangs.

2) The hair is notably pure black. You can compare how the highlights reflect on previous pages: In this image, the highlights reflect to grey-white, as opposed to on Nick where the highlights are always shaded brown.

3) I feel like the bandages seem pretty sparse considering the surgeries I'm assuming Nick would have. Especially if he's to look more Asian, it feels like there would have been more surgery around the cheeks, forehead, and eyes.

4) Nick has three sets of piercings on his left ear. This girl has none.

That said, these have some pretty straightforward explanations. 4 can be explained as just good attention to detail, as piercings would have been removed for surgery, and it's not worth the effort to put divots into the character model just for the sake of having these details. Elena similarly has pierced ears, but the holes weren't shown in the post-surgery models when she's not wearing her piercings.

3 might be that the surgeries themselves aren't done yet. This is reinforced by the fact that he's not had any chest surgery, and I'm presuming further "enhancements" are still to come. Also, it could just be an acceptable break from reality (and again, for the sake of modeling) to get the point across without getting into too much detail.

1 and 2 are more of a meta explanation to me. Clearly, models are made for the characters as they are transformed, and so this is simply the new model's coloration and hairstyle.

But my guess is that it is Nick, and dressing him up in a pink tank top is to help confuse and feminize him. So he wakes up maximally immersed in whatever new role they've got planned.

EDIT: Super looking forward to this new haircut. Straight bangs can work, but I've found them to look particularly unattractive on Nick.

It's up on Kemono now.

Nothing much revealed beyond what we already saw in the preview, except that it looks like we're actually getting ready to head to Korea, which is exciting. Also the lady calls her Kim Minah-Shi. Minji had been calling her Nabi-ya or "Kim Nabi" originally. Are these different names? I don't know Korean naming conventions well enough to follow. Is it possible that the person in the bed is someone else? From context it seems like it is, in fact, Nick, but I'm not sure about the name.

In chapter 3 Minji says: "No, you’re not. Nick is 25, but you’re not Nick, right?
You’re Kim Nabi, a 19 old Korean girl".
I like the suspense and I'm afraid of Minji, she's determined but also cruel.

I haven't followed this story that closely, but this chapter seems include a cover story for Nick disappearing - he's the "junkie" who was killed in the accident (he was accused of stealing drugs early on) and will now become the innocent girl who was innocently involved in the crash. All very convenient!
