It's a bug, at least in my case, when you finish the scene with Christie, I jumped a bug and hit ignore, but that bugged the game, I loaded the game in the sofa scene, I held down ctrl and it didn't jump the bug and I was able to buy the book in the computer store, if anyone knows where these games are stored, I'll pass them on
